Twain was rightly offended that Europe didn’t take America seriously. These days we may find equally offensive the degree to which America remains staunchly ignorant and dismissive of the ninety per cent of the planet that is not the United States. (In this respect the US media mostly play a dismal role. The Evil Empire’s citizens were often far better informed about the world than Americans generally are.)
