1901 Census up and running online

1901 Back on it's feet again...At last it's the 1901 show!(the date not the time) and the UK Public Record Office 1901 Census is up and testing again after having crashed due to overdemand earlier in theyear. And it works! I've discovered my great grandfather was a wheelwright and that his eldest son was a labourer at the gas works (I saw my first naked girlfriend in a bedroom in the shadow of that very gasworks!) and that I had a great great Uncle Percy!

Great stuff. maybe genealogy is of more interest to us diaspora 'mericans. I think I found my grandmum as an east ender (spitalfields) prior to her jump over the big pond a few years after this.

I'd say that the return of the 1901 data is of less interest than it having taken them over ten months to get it to a stage where they can say "The 1901 Census Online service is now in the final stages of testing, and the site is currently available 09.00 to 05.00 hours (GMT) Monday to Sunday. ". Makes you proud of our public services' command of technology, doesn't it?
