'QUAKE' / Friends Screen Shots

Rachel: "Look, she is breastfeeding. Look!" [Phoebe was pummelled by Wizard_cev]
"These images were recorded by the performers during our visit to the "Hulk" server. Note the yellow text at the top of the screen shots which are dialogue from the performance. The blue speakers bubbles represent our characters typing their lines. The other gamers depicted are constantly killing us. Scroll to the right to view additional images."
Conceptual artist Joseph DeLappe and his mates hybridize The Ultimate Shoot-'em-Up with the Acme of Sit-Com: now the teen boys and the teen girls can play together!

So all this is is Friends dialogue typed into a deathmatch?

It sounds more like a griefer at work than an artist, but the difference is kinda blurry these days anyway....

dash: I have to tell you. This is lame. Seek help.

sorry dash, but i have to agree with mischief.

conceptual artist = drunken bum.

Uh, ok, maybe so... I was expecting a dialogue, including other examples of digital media meets tv culture, or other blends of art/games/entertainment.

Akin to game neverending players dumping all the crap they don't want at a given hub, or leaving the game running all day - and calling it art.

Lack of execution. Should have designed skins around all the Friends and also made a map of the apartment and Central Perk. Then they should have made it a public server for others to join.

If that was done, I'd almost say it was passable conceptual art. Right now it's shit.

Stan: By "shit" do you mean formally and aesthetically engaging while conceptually connecting with the everyday thus reifying the ordinary into the extraordinary? Or something else entirely?

I think he just means that it is not worth the virtual paper that it is written on

I feel sick, I know exactly what that said the first time without difficulty.

"Are you nut jobs serious? Don't you know all communication on quake 3 (The Best Game Ever) is to be written in leet?"

Girls think I'm cool.

oh and what ajbattrick said.

This reminds me of shitty (and wiiiiildly superior) movies that some geeks made in Quake. There was a "fucked up sitcom" movie starring an Average Family (Dad, Mom, mischevious young son, breasty older daughter -- custom model for her, with the swaying assets). Had dialogue, camera work, a script, custom maps for interior and exterior of the house...

It was really terrible. It was worse than cable access. But it was a lot better than this bozo's screenshottin' antics, and it required a lot more work, which I can respect.

Ditto, cortex, I couldn't find the sitcom you were talking about, but here's some quake movies that I googled for that while few are 'good', they took a lot more effort and creativity than just chatting up a quake server for the sake of art.

I kinda dug this one.

Should have designed skins around all the Friends and also made a map of the apartment and Central Perk.

If all the characters in Quake 3 actually looked like the characters in Friends, or ideally Total Request Live, I might actually start playing FPS games.

I mean, think about it: if you manage to shoot somebody as David Schwimmer, that just adds to the 0wnag3, whereas if you get your ass handed to you as David Schwimmer, you also win! And since I suck at FPS games to the point of veering around like a vertigo sufferer who's just found God in pixie form, I would always play as David Schwimmer. This would be excellent.

Oh, by the way, most of Joseph DeLappe's other work is very appealing to me. This Vaginal mouse rocks my socks, as does the rest of his mouse series. My critical nitpick is that he should probably brush the quake thing under the rug.

God help me, Hama, I could read that from beginning to end. I had no idea I was fluent in |33t--now I have to go scrub my brain or something...

decent idea, but i have to agree with SC that it was poorly executed. They *should* have skinned the players. However, creating their own quake server and having others join would run counter to the work's nature as an public intervention. If you invite a bunch of people to a performance, it's not really much of an intervention.

Anyhow, public intervention has enjoyed a long tradition in the arts, and it's interesting to see it begin to be applied to the virtual spaces that for many of us, now function as public spaces (i'm not linking that article for comparision between the pieces, but because it provides a little background about public performances). I can see people doing some very interesting pieces around Everquest, for example.

This is stupid - all it served to do was disrupt some people's gaming - how would you like it, if whilst watching a football match, a bunch of 'artists' walked on the pitch and started acting out Friends...
