model warship combat

Damn the torpedoes! The Australian Battle Group is a R/C model warship combat club, with emphasis on combat. Great care and devotion is given to design and historical accuracy, and then they shoot holes in each other with working cannon.

Sites like this only serve to remind me that someone, somewhere, will always have cooler hobbies than I do.

[this is good]

This is one powerful battle group. Do they have submarines with strategic missiles?

I'd definitely want an Aegis cruiser or maybe a Los Angeles-class submmarine. Surface warfare with big guns is so mid-20th century.

From the site:
"The ships are built to withstand sinking. When the ships are recovered and patched (using tissue paper and dope), they are soon ready to fight again."

That's funny. Dope never put me in a fighting mood.

I have a friend who has been doing this stuff in Southern California (as a member of S.C.R.A.P. for years... and his version of the HMS Invincible looks much better than the one at the top of this page. He also makes banjos. He is insane.

alumshubby: subs are really a pain to build- no space for anything.

Ooh! thanks for giving me linkage, I was talking to my girlfriend about it last week. Seems like a lot of effort to go to when it all gets destroyed (or at least perforated) in just a few minutes.

Used to have a nitro class RC car. tons of fun, and man- you can pump those little buggers up :)

This is fantastic. As a child I always had fantasies of building a radio controlled plane with guns and bombs and stuff on it. Never got further than drawing it with crayon, mind.

I've also got a friend that does this, they are the North Texas Battle Group (NTXBG).

These battles are great fun. I've even gotten to pilot a liberty ship in combat before. It's definitely more of a "game" than a simulation. However, most people put a lot of effort into historically accurate models. It's impressive to watch this huge ships cut through a local lake.
