In Soviet Union, Miniatures Carve You!

The work of Russian miniaturist Nikolai Syadristy is amazing - sculptures, watercolors, engravings, all mere millimeters in size. It's a shame, however, that the best online galleries for displaying his works are so limited. This Flash based virtual museum and this horrendous gallery were the most extensive collections available online. Still, his work is worth suffering through the bad user interface & limited English translation to enjoy, for those who wish to know just how many angeles truly can fit on the head of a pin.

Two minutes of looking and I didn't see a single piece of work. Truly amazing.

The Flash link gets to some artwork but there is no visual sense of scale, like how it compares to an eraser head.

This is astounding stuff, here jonson! A nest of swallows inside a poppy seed? a rose inside a hair? poetry in the eye of a needle? Incredible - thanks!

stbalbach, for scale, check out Parallel World to see a sculpture in relation to a mosquito, or Chessmen to see an entire chess game on the head of a pin!

Fun. I've always been amazed by this stuff. And the English translation on the Flash site is cute, too.

"The apple corn is cut longwise."
"The corpulence of the figure, which is made gold, is 5 microns."
"This work . . . maintains the tree-dimensional setting-up."

eee!
