What, you have to leave it for twenty years before it's any good?

On the other hand, the guy's got a point - the auto-proctological soul-searching of some of those types is incredibly lame and boring.

Wait, isn't that essay like 6-8 months old? It sounds really familiar....

Why should it read any different from the last "all webloggers suck" screed to make the rounds?

Teethmag was so cool. Curse that Ben Brown and his inability to stick with a project.

It's different b/c it's parody, and it's old, and written by a MeFi contributor and A-List affiliate :)

I'd like to congratulate Ben Brown on having the courage to take on such a powerful, high-profile group of people. That takes guts! Here's hoping he can find other targets soon, like say a bunch of disabled boy scouts.

This from a guy who contributes to uber.nu, whose joke-but-not-really-a-joke subtitle is "Better Than You. Daily." Haw. Haw. I really find this sort of lovable-iconoclast horseshit tiring in the extreme.

This is from long long long long long long ago. These people weren't "high profile" back then. I'm not sure if Blogger even existed. Weblogs had just found a name and thus a definition and a community and lots of bloggers were preaching their glories, a bit overenthusiastically, probably. This piece is just a reaction to that by a guy who thought all these web people were wasting their time writing short entries when they should be writing really really long stuff instead. Pay no attention to the fact that most webloggers wouldn't be doing any Net writing if it weren't for the short format.

Who said webloggers thought we were all that and a bag of chips? That blame should really fall upon the media nerds that choose to use us to sell their stuff. I think weblogs are nice and all, but we aren't rock stars, people. Really now. ;)

i hadn't remembered you being on the A-list, hackworth. the list grows ever longer... :)

Oh, I'm not. I was just saying that I was a weblogger.

Ben Brown is a bourgeois git, tho. But this is way old, I blogged it twice, the second time a year after the first time...

Hackworth, you must have missed the first few months after Cam, Peter, et al recognized and defined the weblog as a genre. Back then, webloggers were really really excited about the format per se and how it could revolutionize the web. Of course, with the perspective that comes with time, we've come to see things a bit more clearly. But that early perspective that weblogs were a revolutionary format was what Ben Brown was reacting to with that Teeth piece.
