Greg Knauss quoted in Wired Magazine! The creator of EOD, one of my favorite daily reads, is quoted in an article about some software guy. Go Greg!
When will the article be online? So people like me who don't budget for Wired can read it. Congratulations, Greg!
Anyway, Anil, I hope you realize that when Winer gets around to reading this thread, he probably be taking notes. Hope you aren't planning on posting to any of his mailing lists.

(okay...... maybe that over states things. Sounds cool anyway.)
I read the article last night. Very well done I thought. But they did make Winer out to be the heart and soul of blogging. I never really saw it that way. Do I have my head up my ass?

I guess it's a counter to all those articles that have made Blogger (or, more recently, just Ev) out to be the heart and soul of blogging.

Whew! I sure am glad somebody brought up the A-list; we haven't heard anything about them for a while. [snark!] These days, all of the talk about weblogging and community and revolution and personal publishing on the web seems to have very little to do with heart and soul at all. Spleen, more like it. Sometimes that makes me very sad. (No offense, lia. I know your post was light-intended and I agree, at least vis a vis Joey Tio -- that monkey's got soul in spades. Anybody seen him lately?)

I'd like people to remember that all parts of the body have purpose, including that dangling punching bag at the back of your mouth. In fact, I'd like to call dibs on that part, if no one minds.
I'm anxious to see the Greg quote, myself - EOD is a fabulous site. It's also nice to see people other than the frequently quoted bloggers in print.

"He can't apply the same standards to himself that he applies to others," says humorist and programmer Greg Knauss, who last year created the WinerLog parody site (since taken over by a much angrier and less funny group of contributors who write under the collective name Zaphod). "He'll launch into people really hard, doing over-the-top, needless stuff, like posting sexual slurs about Rogers Cadenhead when they disagreed, but then he says there will be no flaming on his own site." Cadenhead, the author of best-selling books on Java programming and other software topics, disagreed with Winer over the propriety of the Third Voice site-editing technology; Winer responded by pointing to a childhood picture of Cadenhead on the author's site and writing, "See the little boy? Want to have sex with him?""Ineffable Essence of Winer," coming soon to a cosmetics counter near you.
Still, Knauss keeps reading. "The Web would be less without Dave. He's a personality," he says. "He cranks you up, makes you nod -- it's not the bland corporate crap that's seeped onto the Net. That's the ineffable essence of Winer, as much as he drives me batshit."

Especially in light of Trellix's relationship with Pyra, I have to repeat my more thorough analysis: Winer could have been like Dan Bricklin. An elder statesman of the software industry, giving guidance and sharing his experience with those who are up-and-coming in the field.
Instead, through a pattern of antagonism and egotism and just plain old silliness, he's managed to tear down the reputation that his background should have given him. It's not impossible to be elegant and intelligent about software development and design, yet still have an opinion — just ask Joel.
But back to the subject at hand: Greg, congratulations. Too bad the article wasn't on how splendid and articulate and human and wonderful your writing is damn near every day over at EOD.
