I don't know why I didn't post this here. I like it, it's airy and loosey goosey, the old one was a bit too tight.

I like not having to scroll as much. Good Derek!

I haven't seen the old version before, but I like this new one. It's clean and like Matt said "airy;" nice and open.

"More room for text. More room for photos." That pretty much kills any objections I might have had to the previous. That, and I'm too lazy to scroll....

Very nice! The resolution on his images are great. I wonder what type of camera he uses.

Hey all! Thanks for the nice comments.

Cavatica - Since you asked, those two photos were taken almost a year ago with my old olympus d-600l. The top one is my old office in Amsterdam, the bottom the plane ride there. Travel has been on my mind lately. ;-)

Orange, Orange, Orange, and now Orange

You're right... think I should be using #FF9900 more often now.

I think the layout is good... I like the sidebar to the left

hey, ain't nothing wrong with orange... : )

i love the new design. i remember asking you, derek, about the orange trend at sxsw... you said "what orange trend?" :)

What orange? (my latest - and almost last - work for my soon to be ex-employer, uploaded today in my absence)

i like the structure (it's pretty traditional web, though), but i'm going to say it: i think it's kinda ugly. but that's just one geek's opinion, and as long as derek loves it, that's all that matters. it's his personal site, so he can do whateverthehellhewantstowithit, thankyouverymuch.

I wonder what Dave Winder thinks of it? ;-)

Looks good Derek.
Though I have to say, it looks a little empty without your mug shot :-)

I actually like the removal of the mug shot. I always feel very uncomfortable when people have a big picture of their face on their site. This new design is grrrrreat!

yeah, I think it's nice too, another simple yet elegant layout is at kottle.org
posted by jzweig at 6:49 PM on March 29, 2000

sorry, that's http://www.kottke.org/modify/index.html, not kottle.org

The new design is fine, although certainly uninspiring.... unlike kottke which I think is quite interesting.

you know you're a hot shit designer when your re-design engenders 19 comments (so far) nice work! Nothing groundbreaking but I think that's the point with this one, no?

Simplicity rules. I just wish it wouldn’t take so darn long to load on my lame computer . . . just like some other dude’s site.
MetaFilter has a great design . . . customization makes it surprisingly versatile + flexible.

too bad he makes the same mistake as many other sites do, designing for a certain size screen resolution. so sad people can't get that simple design rule -- design for all screen resolutions! why is that so difficult?

Hey yarf -- c

Cool! Your first post! Welcome! :-)

Anyway, as far as I know, powazek.com works for all resolutions / browsers / platforms / belief systems just fine. Is something breaking for you? Please lemme know. Thanks!

i think it's great and very inspiring, if only to inspire creativity. change is always good. i love the openness, it feels lofty and breezy.

I dunno, I like the new design, but I kinda miss derek's mug watching over the text.

like the use of white space

I thought I sent an email note to derek directly complimenting him on the site redesign, but I can't seem to find where I put it. It's a refreshing change and I can understand the difficulty in radically changing approaches, such as the elimination of frames and whatnot. He remains consistent with the pure text as navigation concept, and it works for him.

One thing I'd question, though, is the comment of 'finding the idea of critiquing the design of personal sites rather distasteful' meanwhile, with his introduction of the new design, those comments were expressly solicited.

Hey, not all comments are going to be positive.

I have to agree with Uncle Joe. I mean, I don't have to agree with him...but I agree anyway. I really do love the design, but that is one handsome face I'll be missing.

I like the new design. It makes me want to go for a walk in Boston. By the way, Derek, since I know your feelings toward Palatino, what's your favorite Sans Serif font? Come back to Austin any time.
