Stanford University Planning IPO
I know this is starting to scrape the bottom of the April 1st barrel, but I WAS the first person to point out that the heading of the e-mail version of this writer's column is "D A N G I L L M O R O N T E C H N O L O G Y" (logical word breaks after DANG, ILL and MORON)

Even my college paper's standards weren't low enough to let us print prank stories April 1.

It seems like the first rule of April Fool's folly is that it must be, well, funny. Making fun of "those crazy IPOs" is so 1998, not to mention that Esquire did the same thing several weeks ago, except with a hint of skill and wit.

I'd be embarrassed to work at the Mercury News.

Hmm. I wonder if Barron's included eTattler.com on their "going broke" list?

When I was in college long ago, the student newspaper did publish spoof headlines. One time on April 1st they published the headline "NIXON RESIGNS!!!" (I told you I was an oldtimer.)

The joke is that he did shortly thereafter and they ran the headline for real.
