State of the Site: Metafilter financial update and future directions
Important site updates, folks:
1. The site is running at a significant deficit and we urgently need to make that up. Part of that is through additional direct community funding; you can help here.
2. We're looking at—and inviting community input on—several big-picture questions.
Today I want to lay out our budget and income streams, to explain where we're at and what we need ... for extra fill-in hours (e.g. Eyebrows working extra hours beyond her normal weekend coverage, or Jessamyn doing a week of temporary modding), vs. ...
State of Metafilter, and funding update
It’s been a busy year on Metafilter, with some big changes over the last twelve months. Some of the hardest changes were the result of the financial difficulties that came to a head last May with significant staffing cuts. And the best thing to happen for the site was the tremendous outpouring of generosity from Metafilter’s members in response to that financial crisis, through voluntary funding ... us to the point where we were not losing money month to month any more, but hard as it was to lose jessamyn, LobsterMitten, and goodnewsfortheinsane, ...

How to Leave Your Internet Job. Advice for @mathowie on his new adventure by Jessamyn.
In the living room the voice-clock sang
Deathhacks: Tech tips for people who are going to die (someday) Jessamyn West (Mefi's own) describes the challenges that came with being executrix of her father's estate, and his house.
Surprisingly, Atillas are fairly liberal; Adolfs less so
How Liberal or Conservative is your name? A rare "what x are you?" online tool which is apparently based on real data. There is no need to search for the most liberal of all (past and present) MeFi moderator names, I've already done that for you. (keyword in HTML)
Very Narrow
A quick little song inspired by Jessamyn's comment at the two-minute mark on Podcast #88. As per the transcript, a perfect excuse to try out my new USB recording interface:

I have a very narrow, narrow ass. As do you. Medium-sized.
Journalistic MeFite Convergence!
I wrote an article about Jessamyn. You can read it here. Comments and constructive criticism welcome!
Town in a Lake
My loud sloppy garage rock version of Jessamyn's song about Randolph being in a lake. Lyrics are largely incomprehensible, which seems in keeping with the idiom.
Of making many books
I would like to read books by more MeFi writers. I have therefore made a list of who they are and their books. I have included those who have written or edited books only (excluding articles in books). I have excluded a few users whose accounts have been disabled. I know I have missed some – there are users who have definitely written books but keep their name private, so can’t be traced. There ...

How is Facebook doing its queries?
How does Facebook handle or simplify the presumably complicated DB queries involved so that me loading my page doesn't bring it to its knees? When I pull up my homepage on Facebook, it pulls status updates for a subset of my friends, and recent bits of their activity. It filters out the ones that are related to people who have blocked me (hopefully none!) and then shows it all to me.
This ... how the 'blocked user' can work: would it really pull a status update like "Matt Haughey and Jessamyn West are now friends", then pull ...
What's The Deal, Banana Peel?
In this podcast, jessamyn asks for a MeFi Music recording of all the rhymes on this AskMeFi thread. Here's my try. Done using Sound Recorder, an inbuilt microphone, and a bedroom. Excuse the accent and the slight grogginess. There's some repeats; I was just going down the thread.
