OK, I guess I am somewhat embarrassed to admit I have just been introduced to jazz, a genre of music I have never been interested in or listened to before. It was like an explosion of pleasure went off in my head and I discovered that I love it and want to right the wrongs that I have done to myself.

Reading

120 years of Billboard data.
Eternally curious blogger Andy Baio starts a three-day analysis of the data in the Whitburn Project, "a huge undertaking to preserve and share high-quality recordings of every popular song since the 1890s. To assist their efforts, they've created a spreadsheet of 37,000 songs and 112 columns of raw data, including each song's duration, beats-per-minute, songwriters, label, and week-by-week chart position." It all happens on good ol' Usenet--
here's a FAQ.

When was the past better than the present? I'd like to know the word or phrase that describes the romanticism people have of the past, e.g. "In those days, children respected their elders!". I was watching the documentary Born Rich and Cody Franchetti mentions that the encyclopedia was better in the early 20th century. Why? This feeling that "old ways are better" is not exactly nostalgia, because often people expressing this sentiment didn't actually grow up in this utopian past. But their feelings toward this time are exactly like nostalgia.

Meet
Freddie:
He looks up at me and the bargaining begins. "If I eat two peas is that enough?" I am used to him starting the bids low. "Now Fred there are only seven peas on your plate, can't you just eat them? ". He then starts to turn pale. He slumps down into his chair and fiddles with his cutlery, accidentally on purpose knocking them onto the floor to create a diversion. Can one determined woman turn
Freddie into a vegetable lover?

Help me identify this Post Modern cultural theory. Prime example: cops on the TV show COPS act differently than they normally would, since they're being filmed for TV. Kids watch COPS thinking that's what cops actually are like. Kids eventually grow up and be cops themselves, emulating cops-on-TV, not "true" cops.

I realized recently that I’m ashamed of myself at a deep fundamental level. When I fail at something big or small, I beat myself up emotionally more than I should and feel ashamed. I realize that this is not emotionally healthy, but I’m not really sure what I can do to change the dynamic.

I have some hosting. I use oldtld.com currently as a TLD, to point people at it. On oldtld.com, there are several subdirectories, which I'll call /olddir1, /olddir2, etc.
What I want is to be able to buy a new TLD - newtld.com - and point it at the same hosting, yet keep the two separate.

I remember reading this young adult scifi novel as a kid. The basic plot is a girl goes to some special "institute" or something after school. I don't recall all the details of what happened there, something special. But, in addition to that, she got Baked Alaska, which was her favorite dessert. I think the Baked Alaska is the key to this mystery. Please help me find this novel!

I've been trying to make chicken dishes that don't rely on the usual pasta or rice+sauce+chicken combination. I have not been successful. I'm looking for chicken recipes and techniques that rely less on pasta and rice, and more on imparting flavor to the chicken itself.

I am currently on the South Beach diet (Phase 1, one week into it, please do not reply if you are going to criticize). I am not following their meal plans because they are overly complicated and in many cases require ingredients that I can't get here in this small town. If you've got very simple filling recipes that would qualify for Phase 1 and 2 (please specify which), I would really appreciate hearing them!

Looking for the windows program "One Page Calendar"? Back in college, I had a great calendar program that did one thing great: it printed one page, generic/blank calendars.
All I can remember is the name of the file, opc.exe. Does anyone still have this program or know how I can download it? I'm pretty sure it was freeware. If there's better stuff on the 'marketplace' out there, let me know too.

The
Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section was comprised of four session musicians operating out of the tiny northern Alabama town of town
Muscle Shoals.
Just four unassuming crackers who happened to have provided the funky underpinning for a
huge number of hit songs by, among others,
Aretha Franklin,
Wilson Pickett,
Paul Simon,
Joe Cocker,
The Staple Singers ,
Jimmy Cliff and
many, many others. Hey, they were the
house band to the greats. Big respect to the men from
3614 Jackson Highway!
