Chicago for an atypical tourist?
Timsteil...you beat me! American Science and Surplus (in Niles, which is close), is the coolest place EVER. You will be the envy of nerds and geeks and geeklets everywhere! They are even having their annual warehouse sale, so it's like they threw you a party!
Last time, I bought tiny LEDs (fake "security system"), crazy mad-scientist pyrex bottles, and a p-38 (for all my can-opening emergencies).... [more]

You seem to be looking for affirmation here, not information. What you seem to want is for people to tell you that it's OK to do what you've clearly already decided to do.
Attending a class without signing up for it or paying to attend is theft of services. If you attend school, it is the learning that you're paying for, not the credits. What you seem to want is to get that learning without paying for it.
Irrespective of any other aspect of this,... [more]

Is there any fool-proof way of inducing a sickness?
Dude.
You have posted a total of 2 askmefi questions:
"Is there any foolproof way of inducing a sickness?"
"How do I send picture postcards of a city without being in it?"
I suspect that faking an illness is not actually going to fix the underlying problem.

You're aware that it's a security dongle, yes? And that if it were replaceable, it wouldn't provide very good security, right?

Do I have to go in debt over my friend's wedding?
Script (to make it all about you):
"Hey girlfriend, those sample napkins you sent me were really pretty. Speaking of wedding stuff, I wanted to chat with you. I am super excited for you and man. He is so great and I can't imagine a better person for you. And because of that and because we've been friends for so long, I quickly accepted when you asked me to be a bridesmaid. But what I wanna talk about now has been really stressing me out. I probably accepted too... [more]

They are paying for the whole thing themselves.
Egads. The utility companies are going to love it when she explains to them how actually, they owe HER money! And they're ruining her special week/month/year!
Joking aside, she apparently wants a wedding that is way over the budget that she has set with her betrothed. Well, since she's quite aware of how much things cost, she should be more sensitive to your financial situation.... [more]

For those about to work
What I wish I had known more about when I was just beginning my career job 35 years ago related to long-term investments. The need for retirement planning didn't really click in my head until ten years later, so I lost that decade of investment opportunity. It's never too early to begin saving for the future; for family, travel, kids' education, health emergencies, retirement. Congratulations on your graduation and your new job. You rock!

Just for the sake of a little balance in this thread: I think you should wait a little longer before getting a lawyer.
Getting some info from some random dudes on the net might even be enough to get you an overview of the situation and might save you a lot of billable hours.

A while ago I read about Virgin's company VirginMoney which is designed to do exactly this, I haven't used it however, so can't vouch for it. The concept seems sound enough though and they're not a fly by night operation. . .

Holy Cow! I had only the vaguest memory of that show; it was broadcast in 199 freaking 7, and I found it! This guy was fascinating on cat psychology. I don't know if there's an audio archive, but there's information about his book, and a search on him would be profitable. Good luck.

A traveler without observation is a bird without wings.
I travel 2-4 few times a month, often for one-day in-out marathons, and rarely for more than 3 nights at a time. Having a good breakfast is important. I often find that I am forced to miss lunch because of long meetings or insufficient break times. I try to pack a small supply of dried fruit and cereal bars, just in case. In general, I try to eat more healthy than I normally do—lots of fruit and juice and fiber. It's really easy to get run down and pick up colds on business trips.... [more]

USPS shipping options?
I speak from experience that yes, you can send most anything as long it has a readable address and proper/correct postage. When I was younger and totally in love with my first boyfriend I sent him a piece of plastic fruit by mail everyday for a week. You know, the kind of plastic fruit you'd find in a craft store to make centerpieces and decorate your house with? Each piece of fruit had a a cory corny pun written on it (I used a black Sharpie I believe to make sure that the address and message... [more]

Yeah, what you have right here is your classic kangaroo court.
Look, traffic court isn't an episode of Law and Order. The more humble and contrite you can be, the better off you will be fighting a ticket. You were apparently clocked going almost twice the speed limit, so even if you could prove faulty radar, it probably isn't that much off. You might be able to go to traffic school to keep the points off your license, but you will still have to pay the fine and your insurance company can still see it when they renew your policy.

Instead of having this ridiculous two-week wait...
I don't see any problem with rationing postings severely, and I don't see the two-week limit being a drawback.
I think the drawback is that it's made AskMe flipping boring. There are now stretches of hours when only a few new questions are posted. And the questions are no longer of the "Hey, I've always wondered that too!" variety, but now tend to be more focused on mundane-but-pressing issues specific to the askers.... [more]

How do pilots time a flyover?
Stadium events, both for television and in general for sports, are extensively scripted before the event begins. I work for Texas A&M University in the Athletics department, and every one of our games features a flyover by an air wing with at least one former-Aggie member. My job role doesn't directly deal with the video department, but my office is next door.
The answer: Everything that happens except the game itself is scripted.
When the... [more]

Compare MetaFilter to other sites on the Internet. On the one hand we have a place where a small minority of people voice their discontent with individual moderation decisions, once or twice a day. On the other hand you've got a reeking, steaming cesspit.

1. Don't be a jerk.
2. Post something interesting THAT HASN'T BEEN WIDLY POSTED BEFORE.
Your desire for specific rules is petty. I ran a forum for a while, must smaller than metafilter and there were people there demanding some sort of list of rules or specific reasons or how come this got past, while this didn't. Naturally if you spent the many weeks sweating an exact list, trying to cover every damn situation,... [more]

Avoiding the power handshake
