Sarah Palin as McCain's running-mate
Jesus tap-dancing Christ. If McCain wanted a former beauty queen with no experience and a criminal investigation on her record I don’t know why he didn’t just pick his own wife.
Like many other goods lines I pick up here, that one is so good I will shamelessly steal it and re-use it elsewhere. ;-)

Biden Wins Veepstakes!
Biden is a fantastic choice, and ironically for a lot of the reasons people see as a negative.
In simplest terms, Joe Biden is an enormous asshole. And frankly, I love him for it. He's the type of asshole who's an asshole because he knows, right out of the gate, that he's smarter than you, that he knows more about a subject, and that he actually has the right idea about something. And damn it people it's time to finally try having someone who's... [more]

Getting money back from a graduate school program that failed to deliver!
You're throwing a lot of eggs into this basket (I'm not sure if that's an English expression, but it makes sense to me.) Let's get rid of some of the aspects of your argument that work against you:
1) First of all, work a bit on your grammar (and spelling) and pay attention to what you write. it will not only make you sound a little more intelligent, it will help avoid some questions, like following:
2) You write "I was in top rated... [more]

Suspicious lens-fu.
This morning, I discussed this with my previously mentioned, photographer wife.
I showed her the image and she demanded to know what camera and lenses were involved. I shrugged my shoulders and she rolled her eyes at me...
At first she said, yes, a Lensbaby could shoot it with the proper 'plane of focus' along the gold finial, as it is in a straight line.
Then she looked a little closer and said there was Photoshop... [more]

Espresso on Ice is Not Okay
For what it's worth, that's my blog. I wrote that. And it's pretty much a tempest in a coffee cup -- infuriating at the time, but not such a big deal the next day. I milked it for a quick, disposable blog post and got over it a few hours before MeFi (and now BoingBoing) picked it up.
I can totally admit that I behaved like an utter dick in the situation and made a bigger deal out of it than I should have on my blog. But is this really bigger than all that? I don't... [more]

Shit. How likely is that two bloggers would independently write about the same event, one from the point of view of participating in it, the other from the point of view of viewing it; one of the blog posts gets posted to MeFi, and it turns out that blogger is himself a member of MeFi?
Of course, the event did involve over-priced coffee, so that probably shrunk the pool of possible participants.

How do you pronounce 'read'?
It's understandable that one might interpret the question as asking what the most acceptable pronunciation of the world is. And clearly, those of us here have varied standards.
The sad thing about many native English speakers - this is particularly of Americans - is that they've garnered this strange "anti-elite" attitude, wherein speaking and writing a cultivated form of their language is considered "suspect" or "anti-American" or... [more]

It never occurred to me to pronounce it red, as the intent to direct one to a possibly more salient reading seemed so obvious from the context every time it appeared.
Yes, language changes over time, but in this day and age of easily accessible dictionaries when we can point to scholarship tracing the development of usage, it seems very intellectually lazy to fall back on this as a shield against what appears to be simply willful ignorance. We know how the word came to... [more]

It's the past tense. Read lirke the color.
This is wrong, and you should try not to state your personal usage as a Fact About the World. It's an imperative, pronounced /rid/; you can clearly see the development of usage from this OED entry:
9. a. To adopt, give, or exhibit as a reading in a particular passage. Hence, to substitute or understand for (what is said or written).

Once again, I must applaud the general intelligence and lucidity of 'languagehat' and publicly express my mystification of the weird and pervasive ignorance so many native English speakers have of their own language.
As a simple country boy, the OED argument mystifies me as well. It'd be interesting to find a relevant etymological study, however.
Perhaps it would be useful to consider synonyms that have more distinct passive and... [more]

That's a nice post, Adam. And you bring up an excellent point, because language changing has occurred for many, many reasons . . . but the example in question doesn't really make sense in light of any of them I can think up. For example, in English: Crazy vowel shifts in 15th Century English, possibly due to mass sudden migration of speakers into southern England. Or the adoption of many Latinate words via the Normans. Also, when languages "interact," there is often a loss of some... [more]

First of all, you can replace older style R12 refrigerant with new, ozone friendly R134a refrigerant, although you may need to find and fix the source of any leaks for systems which have already lost their refrigerant, to have a repair that lasts. This isn't as big a problem on some systems, as it is on others.
