I'm looking to revamp my organization's wiki. Have you seen a Mediawiki installation with a really well-designed front page?

What are the Mac Software Must Haves

I just switched to Macs and I was a Windows power user (video editing, audio editing, scanning, graphic design, presentations, flowcharting, spreadsheets, databases, web design). What software can I absolutely not live without for the Mac? Being a fan of Open Source software (and excessively cheap) I'd prefer open source apps when possible.

converting avi to mac

I've been sent a very short clip I'd like to use in a presentation, but, familiar problem here, it's an .avi sent from a Windows machine. All I can seem to coax out it for my MacBook Pro, using VLC, etc., is sound. Can anyone suggest the best way to go about generating a quicktime mov or some such, with video, from this clip for my Mac? Is there a way to get a Windows emulator, and covert it there for something to play back in the Mac environment? Or something easier? Thanks in advance for any suggestions...

How can I make the Internet tell me when to plant things?

Tastyfreshveggiesfilter: does anyone know of a public calendar or similar notification service to which an aspiring gardener who has dirt and planting in his genes but has little prior experience with the green stuff could subscribe, e.g., in Google Calendar or iCal?

OS X multiuser security question

This is an OS X multi-user question. My parents have an older iMac running OS X 10.3 and various people use it at different times. I want to set up a guest account so anyone logged in on it will not have access to my parents' private information, settings, etc. I tried setting up a "test" account on my own iMac (OS X 1.4.11) but I find when I log in to it I am still able to see folders and view contents that had been created with my regular (admin) account. How do I set up an additional account so it is only able to view its own content and not that of any other account? (I don't want to use FileVault due to the potential for catastrophic data loss or denial if my parents crash their iMac with FileVault in use.)

unlocking the magic box

my work threw out an old g4 imac (the dome with the flat-panel type) and i took it home (with their permission). unfortunately, when i boot it up, the only option it gives me is to sign in under the admin, and i don't know that password. our IT guy wasn't too much help.

Rounded tabs? It'd be easy...

Just a look-and-feel suggestion: if the (wonderful!) new tabs are squared-off only because you didn't want to add any more images to the page, you could easily round them off (in Firefox and Safari now, and IE eventually) with just a little CSS...

The Flying Karamazov Brothers' Comedy of Errors

In 2003, the Flying Karamazov Brothers workshopped a piece with The Bobs entitled "The Comedy of Eras". In 1992, they performed a show about Le Pétomane billed as "A Comedy of Airs". And in 1983, they started the cycle by creating a vaudeville adaptation of Shakespeare's "The Comedy of Errors". When they brought this adaptation back to the stage in 1987, PBS aired a performance live from Lincoln Center. Tomorrow is the 20th anniversary of that broadcast, and if you enjoy good juggling or bad Shakespeare, you can celebrate by watching it online: part 1, part 2. (Last two links are Google Video, about an hour each.)

Wonderful, more unreadable pages and animated backgrounds.

Facebook to open their API. Online networking site Facebook is adding third-party app support to their API. Adding a new app (which can include ads) broadcasts it to your contacts. Innovation, or recipe for disaster? But can MySpace even be beaten? And if Facebook can poach MySpace's users, do they really want them? For that matter, is MySpace even the juggernaut some claim? Anyone have any ideas for new Facebook app mashups?

The Codex Seraphinianus, a Hallucinatory Encyclopedia, details fantastical beings and impossible places. Burroughs and Brion Gysin's "The Cut-Ups" [torrent].

Online archive of the history of sport

The Amateur Athletic Foundation of Los Angeles has been building a remarkable digital library of documents and articles related to the history of sport and athletic competition. Among the documents currently available are the Official Olympic Reports from all modern Olympic Games through 2002 and back issues from the Journal of Sport History (1974-2002), Baseball Magazine (1909-1918), and the journal Outing (1883-1903), among others. Use the search function to search across all articles.

I need a basic website with paypal checkout. I'd like to use something like a template from template monster (haven't seen any from them that have paypal) with paypal integrated as the checkout. My main concerns are that it be easy to use, safe, and not a cheesy design. Does anyone know of a good option? thanks

Easy website construction and maintenance.

I need to help 10 small nonprofit organizations set up websites. The main criteria is that these groups have to be able to maintain the sites themselves, without needing to learn HTML. Custom-CMS'es are too expensive. Does anyone have experience with good hosts that offer basic CMS-type interfaces? What's the best client-side site builder? I still use notepad for my web work(!), so am kind of in the dark as to what's available.

Eating locally

In the grand scheme of things, eating locally grown food may be more important than eating organically grown foods. To help you reach that goal, there's 100-Mile Diet, a blog that deals with the benefits and pitfalls of trying to eat only foods grown locally; The Eating Well Guide, which will help you find markets, restaurants, etc. that go along with the sustainable foodthink; and Local Harvest, which will help you find local and organically grown food sources. (PS. Now's probably the time to start signing up for your favorite CSA!)
