Oh yay, another comment that's a song parody.

I've never liked these for some reason. I seem to be in the minority there though. Of course I usually just skip them entirely.

This is called theft of services, and may be a felony in your jurisdiction.

However he has a business so I don't think I could ask him for the code.

I suggest you offer him money.

In my day we had to get our research done by the time the library closed at 6 PM. Really, if 10 PM is the cut off from Dad, and he won't budge, then get your school work done by 10 PM.

Ask post: Scrabble
You can only get so good at Scrabble by playing kitchen-table style. If you want to improve your game, you have to work on improving your game. Think of it like softball: if you play every weekend, you can get OK at it. But you're not going to get good at it unless you practice with an eye towards improvement.

1. Buy a copy of the Scrabble Wordbook by Mike Baron. It's ten bucks. C'mon.

2. Learn all of the 2-letter words. There are only about 100... [more]

Ask post: Support for website redevelopment - it's too expensive!
The first thing I suggest you do is try to figure out what actual work you need to have done. The reason that companies can help you with requests like "redevelop this Web site for me" is that they employ designers, developers, system administrators, and all kinds of other people, and they figure out what needs to be done and share out the tasks. If you need work done pro bono, you're probably more in a position of asking individual designers, developers, administrators, etc. to help... [more]

MeTa post: Ten days on #mefi
It's like there is this secret underbelly to the internet, and anyone can get in, but nothing makes sense unless you are an initiate.

I believe you're romanticizing the cesspool that is #mefi on slashnet to an unwarranted extent. It's nothing like 'metafilter in realtime' a la shmegegge's hope; it's a downright blight. Think SomethingAwful hopping around in pain after being castrated and attempting to shriekingly prove its insipidity credentials.

Rip to FLAC with a cusheet, so you can re-make your CDs exactly if the original copy gets damaged. From there, you can transcode to any other lossless or lossy format. FLAC is better than Shorten because Shorten's compression sucks, better than ALAC in terms of hardware and software support, better than Monkey's Audio in terms of software and hardware support, and better than WAV or AIFF because you can tag it and the files aren't huge.

Ask post: How do blind people navigate college campuses?
A good friend of mine during graduate school was blind. When he arrived he was given a tour by a campus representative. We, his friends, also walked various routes with him to help him get acclimated -- on campus, in town, etc. He navigated by cane and not a service dog. Within days he was on his own. He explained that he counted his steps, had "mapped" various soundscapes in his mind, could tell his position by echoes, non-echoes and came to know street crossings, stairwells, etc.... [more]

Just sign up for a hosting service that provides Wordpress as a one-click install (Dreamhost is one among many). It's easy to install custom templates and you won't be limited by any of the wordpress.com restrictions. Hosting plans, especially if you're willing to pay for a year in advance, are pretty cheap ($8-$10/month, perhaps less). You'll also be out about $8/year for domain name registration.

Wow, this website has just about the worst possible information on this topic ever.

Here is why renting is always worse than owning: owning the property you are rent is making the property owner a profit.
