MeFi post: Major Hurricane Gustav heads for Louisiana
Please, bitch, feel free to not bring it.

I'm staying at home as well. My wife's entire family has evacuated here, so there's no way we can leave town.

For what it's worth, where I'm at is unlikely to flood, though we will have terrible wind, rain and tornadoes. We're busy stockpiling supplies and making sure elderly relatives are taken care of. Tonight, just like during Katrina, I'll be at a local nursing home, moving... [more]

Five days away from the ones you love is far too long. Hello, everyone from the wasteland that was, until recently, my beautiful home. Despite what you’re NOT reading in the news, Louisiana is far from “okay.” Yes, New Orleans dodged another cannonball, but tonight, over one million Louisiana residents are sleeping for a fifth night with no electricity.

Today, the smart ones cleaned out their fridge and threw away hundreds of dollars of unfrozen and room temperature... [more]

MeFi post: Final Days
I can't wait until this "Bush" shit is over. I, naively, hoped there would be some legal rectification of the sideways-fucking he and his managers have wrecked on the country but I see now that's as likely as the Press stepping up and writing something that in some way coheres with reality. This is one cocked hat we are not getting out of any time soon.

Until then I hope Bush Jr. sleeps poorly for the rest of his life. I hope he is unhappy and wracked with... [more]

MeFi post: Birth of a 'Horrible' Fandom
The guy astounds me. Someone explain to me again why the powers that be don't have Whedon working on at least two productions at all times.

This is contentious amongst the fandom (God do I hate that word - it seems to have lameness built into it) but when Mr Whedon spread his time between Buffy and Angel, both suffered. A bit.

I did, however, love the 'horsing' of Miss Day. Very clever, and done with such good voices.... [more]

Meatbomb, I can't tell you his reaction to that particular site, but he's shown a great sense of humor about his "death" since this all began in People magazine back in '82.

I can confirm as he lives in my neighborhood and I see him out and about from time to time.

The buildings wrapped in white in photos 1 and 15 are being dismantled in place piece-by-piece in order to build m much taller ones (20 Fenchurch Street and the Shard of Glass, respectively). The Shard will be the tallest building in the country, and possibly Western Europe.

MeFi post: Sarah Palin as McCain's running-mate
So Hillary was cheering for Obama to lose so she can have her run in 2012. Now what? If Obama loses, You have McCain for 4-8 years, then you have to run against Palin, another woman and the sitting Vice President. Not only does this cinch the election for McCain, it completely screws over and buries Clinton. Her dream of being the first female President just got a lot harder.

MeFi post: A Speech So Stirring It Converted Pat Buchanan
I'm looking through sleep-fogged eyes, so I'm going to call it a night, but I did want to say that this guy makes me even prouder than normal to be a resident of Illinois and of Chicago. The city is known for many bad things, but much of the community spirit Obama demonstrated tonight as an essential maxim needed for America can be seen in the way Chicagoans oft (not always, but oft) treat each other and look out for each other.

It's odd, having Obama as a Presidential... [more]

Oh, and I watched both the Clintons' speeches, and Kerry's, Biden's and Obama's, all today. I am a poster boy for cynical Canuck politician-hating, anti-American, kneejerk retro-angerhippy anticorporatists, and despite the fact that I still think Bill and Hillary are tired, cynical hacks, I misted up at least once during the speeches delivered by Biden and Obama, and even, almost, embarrassing as it is me, even a bit while Kerry was doing his ponderous podium lurch.

The homepage of the National Review is amazing at the moment. In case you don't want to click over there (and really, why would you?), it features, not surprisingly, a couple of dozen brand-new articles screaming about how ineffectual Obama's speech was.

One last thing. Someone on the McCain team has already anticipated the connection between Moses/Joshua and King/Obama. It's what was driving that weird ad from last month. People recognized the creepy messianic overtones and rightly saw it as a dogwhistle to the evangelical right. The use of Charlton Heston as Moses crossing the Red Sea was meant to inoculate evangelicals against recognizing in Obama the realization of Dr. King's legacy. Irresponsibly, the McCain campaign raised the imagery... [more]

MeTa post: De-eponystericalism
Consider the beaver. It's whole life, basically, is gnawing down trees, building dams, and making more beavers. Oh, and eating. That kinda goes without saying.

What would make a beaver angry -- Utility conflicts in the dam-building zone? No. The annoying red tape associated with land use permits? No. Tail cramps? Possibly. Having to work on the weekends? Could be.

In short, anything we can imagine that would make a beaver angry would... [more]

The First Really Serious Female Candidate just stepped aside for the First Really Serious Black Candidate, both of whom had (and one still has) a very decent shot at becoming the real, actual President of These United States.

The roll call was great, well-executed political theater. The disputed Florida and Michigan delegations were given crucial opportunities to cast their full votes, New Mexico honored the Illinois delegation by yielding the floor to them that allowed them to symbolically yield to New York in turn, and Sen. Clinton made the motion herself to nominate Obama by acclamation as expected. I'm certain that for more than a few supporters of Sen. Clinton, the way the ending was choreographed made the whole... Regional humor is an odd thing. I listened to a couple of Clower's pieces and I found them annoying. The regional humor of my home state of Maine is pretty similar-- rural people are crafty except the few of them who are dumb, but they are still smarter than urban people and law enforcement. But it always seems really formulaic. The only difference between Maine humor and Southern, besides the regionalism, is the narrative style-- Maine humor should be as dry as possible.... [more]
