Spy music! Whether it's
Lalo Schifrin's theme for
Mission Impossible, or
Jerry Goldsmith's theme for
Man from U.N.C.L.E., or the greatest of them all,
John Barry's iconic
James Bond theme, you know it when you hear it. Now, for my money, the best spy music in
recent years wasn't from a spy movie at all, but an animated superhero film: the action-packed
theme and soundtrack for
The Incredibles, in which the very talented
Michael Giacchino was clearly (and brilliantly)
channeling John Barry. And of course, you'll all want to head over
here and see what your fellow MeFiers have lately been doing with the genre.

What's
Folk-Punk? Although celtic-punk groups like the Pogues, Flogging Molly, and the Dropkick Murphys may have been the first bands to combine punk rock with folk music, other groups have been crossing over folk music and punk rock for some time now.

While traveling in Italy, I happened to notice Native American tattoos on more than one youngish Italian man. Was this just a coincidence, or is there a preoccupation or admiration of Native American culture among Italians?

I've been learning guitar for just over a month now and it seems to be going quite well. I'm trying to get my chord transitions fast and smooth with the easy open chords before I move on to more difficult ones. I've found a few songs that I can play with just these chords by looking through the usual guitar tab/chord websites, but finding them this way manually is time-consuming. Where I can search for songs that only include a specified set of chords?

Is it ethical to fake conversation in your own blog's comments section? I don't mean stirring up controversy for the sake of it or setting up straw-man arguments. I mean chucking some "model" comments on to the end of a batch of posts to let readers know the comments are there and easy to use. As a codicil: Has anyone done this and found that it effectively enticed discussion?

The Bicycle Tutor
For the past few months I've been producing weekly video tutorials that help people fix their own bikes. There are still hundreds of topics to cover. To make it easy for visitors to track new tutorials, I've included the option to
subscribe by email or
RSS.
I'm open to suggestions, and I'd be really happy to hear any feedback. Thank you!

Dog-gone-paws-filter: I adopted a dog, and she's can't keep her paws to herself. She paws people to get their attention, and constantly jumps on people for the first few minutes of interaction. I've tried the tricks I used to train my other dog (ignoring them when they behave badly, grabbing their paws and scolding "no"), but it doesn't seem to work. Even the "a tired dog is a good dog" method doesn't decrease the pawsy-ness. My friends and family won't have anything to do with her cuz they have muddy-paw-print-on-clothes-phobia. Help! Aside from this one bad habit, she's a Good Dog (TM), and oh-so-eager to meet people.

All right, so, I love Tom Waits. A lot. Like most people love their grandmothers, I guess, except I've never made a turkey out of my handprint in some finger paint for Tom. What are some bands/artists who sound like that? Particularly latter-day Waits: Bone Machine, Mule Variations, Real Gone, etc. I've never been that big on the ballads, I confess (there goes my hipster cred).

Rails of War
is a terrific flash game, where you equip a train with ever-increasing combinations of weapons and guide it through various missions. It is a representative of the growing number of Defense-style flash strategy games started by
Tower Defense and friends, which we discussed before. Now you can try
Age of War, where you try to destroy an opponents base through five distinct eras;
Invasion Tactical Defense where you must manage a nuclear missile plant and its anti-aircraft defenses; the inevitable and
previously mentioned zombie defense games;
StarCraft FA5, where you are the Zerg defending your base; and the lovely and abstract
Red. These is a particularly addictive class of games, so be warned...

THE ROOTS OF CHICHA: Psychedelic Cumbias from Peru
"Borrowing the well-known cumbia rhythm from their Amazonian neighbor Colombia, enterprising Peruvian musicians grafted it on to indigenous styles with emerging rock ānā roll from the United States. These cumbias amazonicas migrated to the capital of Lima and their music became known as chicha (named after a fermented corn drink made for centuries and drunk by the working class).
The music compiled on The Roots of Chicha: Psychedelic Cumbias from Peru is truly transcendent: instantly hummable melodies getting down with surf-rock wah-wah pedals, farfisa organs, moog synthesizers, and dirty electric guitars, all the while delivered with a raw sensuality and enthusiasm."

At a time when fed-up American citizens are
petitioning Congress to end the imprudent financial practices that caused the
housing bubble sub-prime mortgage crisis liquidity crisis impending recession -- including the banning of
SIV's and
refusing any bailouts for Wall Street, banks, or mortgage companies -- the United States Treasury Department
has just announced the creation of a giant-mega-ultra SIV called "M-LEC" made up of assets from several of the largest American banks. Already unofficially nicknamed "Sivie Mae" (or worse,
"the Frankenstein Fund"), it would be an off-balance-sheet way for these banks to pool and price the
ABCP's that they've lately been having trouble pricing and thus selling -- i.e. the liquidity crisis.
