Dock Ellis & The LSD No-No by James Blagden (SLYT). MetaFilter is no stranger to the late Dock Ellis and the legendary no-hitter he pitched under the influence of everyone's favorite indole phantasticant (previously: 2001, 2005, 2008), but this animation takes the story to a new level.
Stabbing myself in the eye with a letter opener doesn't seem to be an appropriate reaction to this problem.
I just spent another hour going through giant stacks of mail and shredding crap and I swear I can't take it anymore.

Goodbye, "Leih Hou Ma," Hello "Ni Hao Ma!"
"Chinatown" communities across the United States (New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, Boston, San Francisco) are undergoing a shift in linguistic identity, as recent immigrants are more likely to natively speak Mandarin (the official spoken language of China, Hong Kong and Taiwan,) instead of Cantonese.
Places to study in Vancouver
Vancouverites: Where's the best place in the city to go and study? With good Wi-Fi, of course.
The decline of architecture?
Why is it that I seem to instinctively prefer houses from the late-19th or early 20th century to post-war architecture?
How To Write Badly Well
You have a great idea for a novel and it's almost November, so you think now is the time to get cracking. You've decided that hiring a ghostwriter is too easy, but you don't have 100 days to write your novel and the snowflake method seems too frilly. Snowflakes, those delicate little monsters that papered your car when you were stranded on the road in Minnesota. A single snowflake is beautiful, but millions make an avalanche. You were cold, so cold, yet you survived. You're not sure if you have time to read a book on what not to do (UK edition), and the search results are daunting. Forget all that, because you already know how to write, right? Embrace your awesome, magnificent, spellbinding abilities, go forward but never back, ever spinning, shake the rain off your bedspread, and now that you have brewed a delicious pot of steamy, hot, life-giving coffee, you can learn how to write badly well. What uses similar skills to computer programming, and is enjoyable in the same way, but does not involve excessive computer use?
Creative Non-Computer Job
What's a good career for a creative chap, who loves computers but doesn't want to be stuck on one all day? A position where he could use his imagination, and do some technical work, but not be a monitor monkey?
MétaFiltre!
The Canadian Government’s Translation Bureau recently made its French/English/Spanish technical terminology database, Termium, free to access after over a decade as a subscription-based service. While off-the-cuff translations are often available from free services like BabelFish, Termium focuses on technical terminology such as scientific, medical and legal terms.

Where do I get Vancouver Olympics tickets this late in the process?
I just realized the Olympics are happening in a few months and they are within driving distance. I have memories of going to several events during the 1984 games as a small kid, and loving the experience. Is there any chance this late in the game that I could get tickets to some events like speed skating or ski jumping? Are scalpers the only option at this point? Are hotels already well-booked?

Help! My door knob is stuck and I'm trapped in my room!
Help! I'm stuck in my bedroom. The knob won't turn much either way and won't come unlatched. The only person who has a key to my house is out of town, so I can't even call a locksmith and have him let in. How can I get out of my bedroom? The door knob is the kind with screws only on the exterior. I've tried to slide a credit card in, but that did not yield results. Anyone have any advice to help me get out of my room?

Oh yeah, well the jerk store called... Comebacks for the introverted
What is a good comeback for an introvert, attending a social occasion, who gets told, for the umpteenth time, "Hey you're really quiet aren't you?"
In search of beats.
What has happened to the instrumental hip hop scene? The only current producer "pushing things forward" in long player format that I know of is Flying Lotus. Who are the contemporary heirs to DJ Shadow, Prefuse 73 and Madlib?
Academic Shibboleths
A recent tomorrow was criticized for describing a mathematician as working with equations and "running the numbers". What are the canonical signs that someone doesn't know much about your field, or only picked up enough to make cocktail-party conversation? (categorized science and nature, but other disciplines welcome!)

The Loss of Human Scale: Old Hong Kong vs New Hong Kong
For the last two years, Flickr user HK Man has been collecting old photos of Hong Kong, finding the exact spots at which they were taken, and taking them again. The result, from his first photo of Victoria Harbor to a more recent one of Nathan Road, comprises a chronicle of Hong Kong's unrestrained vertical development over the past few decades. In a similar vein, Gwulo is a community site for "for everyone that is interested in old Hong Kong" and includes photos, mysteries, and discussions -- such as this one about old Kai Tak Airport.

what are downsides about Vancouver?
I visited Vancouver (Canada) this past weekend for the first time, and I was blown away. I'm from the US, and have visited or lived in pretty much in the US. So for those of you from Vancouver, what are the downsides of the city?

Drupal Power-User Needed!
My company has a Drupal job that needs some attention over this weekend and into the beginning of next week... mostly troubleshooting an existing site and making edits to meet a (high profile) client's needs. It shouldn't take more than a few hours if we can find a responsive, thoughtful person who is already a Drupal god/dess and can get up to speed on our project VERY quickly. Can you help?
How do I improve my body language to improve my days?
I'm fascinated by studies of body language and their application - yet my own body language sucks - I seem to have - 'hey, cut in front of me when I'm walking or queueing' or 'when I express an opinion, puff up and argue with me' - even though sometimes I actually do have the right info. Does anyone have theories on the type of body language I can use to dispel/improve this? Being short, female and 38 with a 'kind' face doesn't give me a good head start apparently. I look forward to hearing your thoughts. This can get to be tiring and annoying - and I'm actually pretty patient.
