I emailed forrest and asked him why he disabled his account. He's not upset or angry about anything. He said that he realized a while ago that his posts were right on the edge of the guidelines and he made a vow to stop posting if that ever seemed to be a problem. There seems to be some arguments going back and forth about that issue and he doesn't think any posts are worth getting people upset. Will Metafilter fall apart without his posts? No. Will his life fall apart without Metafilter?... [more]

Boing Boing Finds 21st Century Trotsky?
I know a bunch of the people involved in this, though I don't know the story behind it, and I've been on every side of this kind of shitstorm before. Based on having gotten stuck in similar situations in the past, here's the likely story:
* Either as an editorial decision, or because of some inflexible requirement (a legal dispute, something like a DMCA claim, advertiser objections), content was clearly taken down.
* Not everybody on the BoingBoing team is up... [more]

Just posted this on our thread. In the interest of getting this thread up to 1984 posts, I'm going to copy it here. (But I don't intend to reply to specific questions in both places. No offense.)
So, hi!
There are lots of separate but related concerns being voiced about this whole thing. I appreciate that, even when very valid points were couched in vitriol or vehemence. We weren't being twee when we said we were listening.... [more]

Sit, ubu, sit.
Was the boobies MeTa the catalyst? Can someone who was around on Thursday explain briefly - where everyone went and what happened? I did read the thread, but a lot was deleted.

Boooooooooobs.
Or are you in the "Look, blatant staring is not OK, but sometimes people sneak a quick glance and that can be unavoidable."
Yes. And it took over 400 comments to get there apparently.
There are so, so many things wrong in this thread. I want to say so many things, but I only have 10 minutes, not an hour and a half.
I read most of the thread last night just shaking my head.... [more]

Generic Celebrity Thread Blues
It served to provide a most excellent insight into the motivations behind some of the more awkward and frequently castigated posters, not that they weren't dubiously transparent to begin with. It was hilarious to hear one admit he believed it to be "our" "duty" to "cut" "them" "down to size". Not that any more validation was needed, it's just always refreshing to see how proud some people are of their petulance.
It serves... [more]

Meh
'Meh' is the first letter of one of Apathor's "Sixteen or Seventeen Dread Names or Something." Modern Apathites, especially those of more progressive Order of the Passive Snark, use it as minor invocation of their patron's powers. Apathor, being an ancient god of laziness and lack of motivation (his most famous of temples, the never-quite-completed Pile of Bricks of Babel, had its last biblical mention expunged from the Bible in 978 by a lazy Irish monk - it was late... Pregnancy is Weird, isn't it?
First off, congrats! I'm finishing up my first pregnancy, and though I'm younger than you at 28, there's no doubt that this has been a weird, yet great, experience. If I had to sum up my main words of wisdom from the past year's wild ride:
- For me, the worst part of pregnancy was weeks 6-12, and then slowly getting better from weeks 12-14. But prepare for morning sickness to be awful. There were times I was sitting at my desk at work when I was... [more]

wtf quonsar
Quonsar's not a troll, but he's not nearly as funny as lots of people seem to think he is. He'd be the funniest guy ever in 5th grade. Except we're not in 5th grade anymore.

Mr President your mike is still on!
I can't believe Bush's the disrespectful treatment of Blair, I'm ashamed as an American. "Yo, Blair"??? Can you imagine Ronald Reagan summoning the U.K. Prime Minister with "Yo, Thatcher"?
And Did anyone else catch him calling the prime minister of Lebanon "Bashad"? It's Bashir Assad, dummy. How would he feel if Tony Blair called him "Gush"?
I'm sort of hoping Blair goes over to Vladimir Putin and has... [more]

He's watching porn. At work.
Seriously, have you "what's the big deal? Porn isn't the end of the world. Don't make a federal case out of it." Types ever actually worked in an office?
Watching porn at work is about a big a deal as they come. It is sexual harrassment in the extreme. This is a HUGE FUCKING DEAL. Short of acutally committing an acutal crime at work, this is as large a violation of generally accepted codes of... [more]
