Cat-Scan.com
is one of the strangest sites I've seen in some time. I have no idea how these people got their cats wedged into their scanners, or why.

I have a wireless router in my house. 150 metres away I have a shed where I want to be able to use the internet on my laptop. There are electricity outlets in the house and in the shed but not in between. How do I get the signal from the house to my shed?

"You're really smart!"
Psychologist
Carol Dweck says that praising a child for being smart only teaches the kid to avoid any effort that might fail. "When we praise children for their intelligence, we tell them that this is the name of the game: Look smart, don't risk making mistakes." Malcolm Gladwell chimes in with
his thoughts on the importance of being a smart kid, "What a gifted child is, in many ways, is a gifted learner. And what a gifted adult is, is a gifted doer. And those are quite separate domains of achievement."

Plane crashes in to the word trade center.
Apologies for not linking to anything besides the main CNN page but there are no full stories on this yet. The plane crashed into the building about six minutes ago, from what the TV is saying. We are about sixty blocks north and we can see the smoke over the skyline.

Whole-room voice control of lights using open-source software. Can it be done? Has it been done?

Can I just make a frustration-vent post? These days it seems like MeFi is down constantly, several times a day, and to be honest... I'm getting to the point where I'm about ready to move on to another spot. The problem is that, for me, my main community site is like comfort food; it's a place that I can always pop into to see posts and comments from the people I know, and I can always fill in a time gap or soothe my real-life-related nerves by browsing there. But one of the things about comfort food is that it has to be easy and accessible, and lately, MeFi... isn't. So I have some questions...

I'm having a mid-life crisis and it's all Metafilter's fault! This is especially upsetting as I'm only 31 and this means I'll be dead by 62. Honestly, though, the more I read about what others here are creating and persuing, the more I find myself wondering what the hell I'm doing with my life. Perhaps this is good, in that maybe this will motivate me to get off my ass and contribute something to the world. I'm just wondering, am I the only one who fells like this reading the 'filter? Is this actually a mid-life crisis or am I just going crazy?

You'll put your eye out!
My childhood was fraught with peril. I rode bikes without a helmet. My friends made flashpowder bombs. I brought knives and lasers to school. I survived. Blogger Tim Blair did too, and asks "What insane risks did you take as kids that would now induce rage and fear if repeated by your children?"

WikiFilter: Like many of you, I am looking for a wiki solution for my personal notebook/data storage needs (i.e. running on a PC only, no server involved). I am bowled over by Mediawiki every time I visit Wikipedia. But is there any simple way to implement Mediawiki (or a comparable wiki engine) on a plain ol' Windows XP desktop?

Suppose you killed somebody...
How would you dispose of the body without getting caught? Would you dump it somewhere? Bury it in the backyard or basement? Dissolve it in lime? What? What would your master plan be that would allow you to get away with it?
And no, I haven't killed anybody and I'm not planning to - I was just curious.

Making a watch by hand.
In these days of “fast” and “convenient” I decided to commence a work of “painstaking” and “craftsmanship”, making my own wristwatch. I have had the idea for a certain arrangement of the watch dial, as on the image at the right, for a while now. My investigations into available movements showed that no production movement would give me this layout. After a long period of indecision and wondering what I was really getting myself into I decided to make my own movement, followed by the case and dial.

I'm working on favorites and releasing what I have today. Think of favorites as an internal bookmark system, a way to keep a list of the good questions, great comments, or interesting ideas you've found here.
Right now, you can mark a thread on mefi, metatalk, or ask mefi as a favorite, and view it at the link in the header above (is the header too wide for small monitors?). All your stuff marked as a favorite is public and anyone else can see the stuff you've marked (this comes in handy later on).
I'll be adding the ability to flag comments later today and very soon I'll be doing something akin to the
fantastic posts page on Ask MeFi, where the most favorited things over the past few days is highlighted on a single page.
