Schizophrenic Synchrinicity

Schizophrenic Leanings - Split Films :) Are there any films that were made to be watched at the same time, say, on a second TV, as other, related / opposing / complimentary films? Separate soundtrack visuals or somesuch perhaps?

Clueless about infographics

I'm currently studying graphic design and I've been given a job creating infographics for a business magazine. I know my way around Illustrator but I don't really know anything about creating infographics.

Corporate Rock Still Sucks?

The 120 Minute Archive -- an attempt to gather all of the playlists of MTV's now-defunct late-night alternative rock program which ran from 1986 to 2003. Along with the videos were loads of live performances. Sure, it went down in quality in its second half. But where else in the pre-Internet days of 1992 could small-town kids discover Tom Waits, Morrissey and Sonic Youth in a single sitting?

101 Free Games

101 free games for Windows. Computer Gaming World (now called Games For Windows) lists some excellent downloads. Some standouts: Penumbra, a physics-based horror adventure; now-free classics like Star Control 2, Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, and Maniac Mansion; remakes of other classics like the Star Wars arcade game; addictive action title Every Extend; Asteroids-meets-RTS Base Invaders, and many, many more. Are they missing anything (besides TrackMania, ADOM, and Cave Story)?

Sweep the Leg

Sweep the Leg is a new music video by the band No More Kings. It is a parody of The Karate Kid and it was directed by Johnny himself. There are a couple of other funny cameos in the video as well. This is also related to a cool list of the best villains from 80s movies (Where Johnny is noticeably absent). Oh, and Johnny (William Zabka) was nominated for an Oscar last year. Via.

Barack Obama and the Religious Left

In preparation for today's announcement of the formation of a presidential exploratory committee, Sen. Barack Obama has been giving well publicized speeches on the role of religion in American political life. Though faith remains a deeply divisive force in the American political scene, Obama seems to be positioning himself at the forefront of a major political realignment, one which has his opponents more than a little uneasy.

PHP MySQL database creator

There are so many ideas I can think of for websites, but don't have the full skills (or time to learn the skills) to generate the Php/Mysql code and interaction. Is there a good application that can create the coding and website for me, if I give it the right information?

are there accepted standards for web design?

I was wondering if there are some accepted, current standards or design guidelines for web applications. In particular, I'm wondering about such things as target screen resolution (i.e., don't go wider than 800 pixels), color depth (make everything work at 256 colors), color choices (stick to things like 0xXXYYZZ, where X Y and Z are one of 0, 3, 6, 9, C, and F). specific answers or pointers to resources are much appreciated.

Will raising my computer up off the floor really help?

Some tech guy once told my wife that leaving your computer tower on the floor will destroy it. His solution was to raise the tower up an inch or two off the floor. That's the part I doubt. I know computers suck in a lot of dust. Does raising them up that little bit really help much?

Postapocalyptic Bleakness

La Jetée. Following the postapocalyptic bleakness of the Threads posting, you may wish to watch La Jetée,, a 28-minute film told nearly entirely in stark black-and-white photos (and, in this version, with an English narration). This has quite a following, especially since Terry Gilliam's eerily similar 12 Monkeys.

The don't be Evil Empire?

people aren't happy about Google canceling it's API and replacing it with an AJAX search widget you're supposed to put on your page (and one that's deliberately obfuscated and difficult to extract data from). Google's obsession with secrecy isn't going unnoticed, and some employees are starting to feel like the magic is gone and they're being treated like children. Oh, and just to keep things in perspective Microsoft just filed a patent on RSS

Phriendly philm philosophy

Metaphilm is the place to come for insights on (mostly) contemporary films, be they the interesting Punch-Drunk Love as postfeminist male's narrative and Nietzsche and the Meaning of Noir or the not-quite-so-interesting-but-certainly-interesting Identity as primer on Jacques Lacan. Once you've gotten past all the ph-instead-of-f spelling and exhausted the archives, be sure to play around with the Movie Mapper to find what scenes in film have taken place where. (two Metaphilm essays previously discussed here and here.)

The IT Crowd is a sitcom produced for Channel 4. Although it follows the traditional laugh-track sitcom format, it manages to have some really funny moments. Season one was only six episodes, but season 2 is due to start this January. Chris Morris is particularly good as the CEO, Denholm. Full episodes can be found on YouTube and Google Video.

The hills (and everything else) are alive...

The idea of treating everyday, ambient noise as music is not terribly new, but Noah Vawter's device turns ambient sounds into music (in a somewhat more traditional sense of the word):
Ambient Addition is a Walkman with binaural microphones. A tiny Digital Signal Processing (DSP) chip analyzes the microphone's sound and superimposes a layer of harmony and rhythm on top of the listener's world.

Cool software visual design

I'm looking for examples of awesome-looking information displays. This can be anything from interesting OSs, "command center" control displays, and information software that is graphically impressive in its visual design. An information screen/program that makes you go "wow" on looks alone, whether public or proprietary. Any screenshots? I hope I'm describing this right.

Peter Greenaway speaks

Peter Greenaway speaks (what follows are short Youtube excerpts of a lecture by Greenaway): on the tyranny of celebrities; on Martin Scorcese; on airport bookshops and culture; on notions of media; on his belief that Bill Viola is worth ten Scorceses; on why he goes on making films; on the notion of the frame in theater and cinema; on Dutch producer Kees Kasander; on why we have to get rid of the camera: "There's a way in which a camera is essentially a mimetic tool which tells us how the world exists, and what it tells us is always going to be less interesting than what's really happening out there. Also: interview about 8 1/2 Women.
