Boing Boing Finds 21st Century Trotsky?

Without explanation, all of Violet Blue's posts have been removed from Boing Boing, raising serious questions about ethics and revisionism that run contra to the thoughtful declarations of blogging pioneers. Is this hypocritical in light of BB's own public bouts with censorship? Or does this reflect an altogether different loss of control?

Best Free File Sharing Script?

Four years ago, Aaorn asked after "free software that will let me set up a document dropbox on my web server. Basically I want to upload files and then have them be available -- through a nice-looking interface -- to users of my choosing." TooManyGadgets recently posted a question that brought DropBox to my attention, and after littleme was kind enough to share a DropBox beta invite, I wanted to revisit the original question. Obviously, there are lots of free scripts that offer the ability to do server-based file-sharing, but which is the best (security + ease of use, with free preferred but not necessary)?

How to make vodka bacon-flavored?

How can I infuse bacon flavor into vodka? The product doesn't need to be vegan or kosher or anything special---just want to go into a kitchen and whip up some bacon-flavored vodka.

Downsize me

I want everything I own to fit in a Corolla. After spending nearly a week to move 3 blocks, I decided I'd like to pare down my belongings so they'd all fit in my car at once (minus the furniture). Mainly because I will be driving somewhere else to live soon. What creative ways have you cut down the size of your stuff?

How can I put the sour back into the sourdough?

Slight tangent from this question: the sourdough rises on command and leavens the bread, texture is fine - but the sour is gone.

No sugar, no flour, no Splenda.....No dessert?

We have a visitor whose birthday is coming up. She doesn't eat any sugar or flour. We want to have some kind of dessert that night (probably not cake, I guess, since that seems impossible, given the restrictions), but something fun to end the birthday meal would be great. Problem is the rest of us don't eat artificial swetteners like Splenda. Is there anything I can serve, besides a plate of fruit? (Just doesn't seem very festive) Thanks.

Got rice [cooker]?

I wish to end my barbaric method of cooking rice in a saucepan. I'm stuck between the Zojirushi NS-LAC05, NS-ZCC10, and NS-TGC10. I've checked the product comparisons. Will I miss not having "Extended Keep Warm" - and how is that different from the already-present "Automatic Keep Warm" anyway? What in the world is this "Rinse-Free" and "Sweet Rice" settings, and will I miss them? Is "Cake" decent? Why is picking a rice cooker so complicated?

True tales of adventure

I am looking for true tales of adventure, preferably memoirs. Here are some examples I've already enjoyed: Apsley Cherry-Garrard's "The Worst Journey in the World", Thomas Cochrane's "Autobiography of a Seaman", and Ernie O'Malley's "On Another Man's Wound" and "The Singing Flame". Priorities are quality of writing, closeness of the writer to the events being described, and extremity of the adventures.

The path to solar-powered enlightenment

Electronics have always interested me (see, see, see), especially solar power. In hopes of learning as much about it as I can, I'll be taking a few select Electronics courses at my local technical college next semester (and beyond). My question is which courses should I take to reach my goal the quickest.

Where should I, a physician, draw the line at...

Where should I, a physician, draw the line at commenting on health-related posts in AskMe?

I enjoy thinking about folks' medical puzzles and often learn something in the process of trying to solve them. However, I'm a neurologist, so most of what I comment on is well outside my scope of practice. I've tried to make it clear in my user info that I'm not commenting in my professional capacity as a medical advisor, but instead as "just another Metafilter user." But if you scroll down to roofus' thought-provoking post a few days ago, you can read about a number of harmful things that we docs could inadvertently be causing, including but not limited to the inflammation of hypochondria, acute bad-adviceFilter, and sudden dismemberment or death.

What do folks think? Should I just can it before I get sued?

Carpet Tile?

Has anyone used carpet tile? If so, were there any problems with the tiles not staying in place? Also, if anyone can recommend a manufacturer, I'd appreciate the tip. I've seen Interface Flor but want to explore my options, if any exist.
