Neverwinter Nights is out!!!
After waiting 4 long years and wading through a fetid quagmire of let-down rumors and whatnot, I finally have a copy installed on my laptop
right now! Run, don't walk to your local Software Etc. and see if they have a copy. Our local
WotC didn't have a copy, and neither did our local
Electronics Boutique or
Best Buy.

I first encountered the concept of
forest gardening in Charlotte Perkins Gilman's
Herland (1915)
[relevant part pages 79-80]; the fictional race of women in her book have completely remade the forests to contain only beneficial and food-bearing plants, which live harmoniously together and replenish the soil naturally. This is
actually being done, less than a hundred years later.
More;
similar,
similar.

You won't find
Donkeyskin in many modern fairy-tale anthologies, perhaps because it concerns a girl so beautiful that her own father wanted to marry her. But don't worry, she dresses up as a donkey and escapes! Made famous by Charles Perrault, the story has
many variants--Catskin, Allerleirauh, Thousandfurs, The She-Bear, All Kinds of Fur--and has been subject to many
interpretations. The tale was illustrated by several of the great gift-book illustrators, including
Arthur Rackham,
Kay Nielsen,
Gustave Doré, and the less well-known
R. de la Neziere. (More R. de la Neziere
here and
here.) Oh, and here's a
sexy one.

Low volume, book scanning service? I want to ship to these people my (recent, copyrighted) paper- and hardbacks, and they scan them, destroy them, ocr them, proof them, and email me back a pdf. I have many books that I want to reference, but I like to move a lot, and they're weighing me down.

In 1974 - or 1976, depending who you ask -
Armistead Maupin began writing "an extended love letter to a magical San Francisco” in the form of a serialized, fictional drama published originally in the Pacific Sun, the San Francisco Chronicle and the San Francisco Examiner, originally called
"The Serial" which then became collectively known as
Tales of The City.
It is a suprisingly beautiful, deep, emotional, cosmopolitan and
lasting tale about life in San Francisco in the turbulent, heady days of the 1970s and 1980s.
Widely credited with and cherished for helping spread a little of the openess, tolerance and acceptance that San Francisco is now famous for. It then became a series of books -
Tales of the City,
More Tales of the City,
Further Tales of the City,
Babycakes,
Significant Others,
Sure of You - and lastly, the spin-off tale of
Michael Tolliver Lives. Almost exactly twenty years after first publishing, it then became
an excellent miniseries from the United Kingdom's Channel 4, which
aired in the United States on PBS, but not without
protest or limitations.

Can anyone suggest a really great paper airplane design or a cheap balsa glider? The idea is to nest it beneath a kite and release it at the highest possible altitude.
I have the release worked out (we have considered dropping eggs on people) but don't have any idea what plane would work best in this scenario.
My kids have been really into flying kites lately and I thought this would be a cool way to have some fun with it. Thanks in advance!

American Icons from Public Radio International's
Studio 360 is host/author
Kurt Andersen's "...survey into the books, movies, art, and architecture that have come to represent American culture and character."
* For example, in the episode on '
Moby-Dick,' listen to Ray Bradbury, Tony Kushner and Frank Stella talk about Melville and his literary masterpiece. Listen to Laurie Anderson compare 'Moby Dick' to 'Star Trek.' In a segment on '
The Great Gatsby,' listen to the only known recording of F. Scott Fitzgerald. Then witness Salman Rushdie as he credits '
The Wizard of Oz' as his first literary influence while Bobby McFerrin performs snippets from his eight-minute medley condensing the entire movie.

If you believe that people are inherently good, and you approach the world with trust — if you might accurately be described as dewy-eyed and idealistic — if you believe that justice occurs and evil is punished — how do you preserve these elements of your personality (trust, innocence, belief in justice) in light of the urge to protect yourself from hurt and attack (emotional shielding)?
