What are the most intellectually stimulating podcasts?

What podcasts will make me more intelligent just by listening to them? I enjoy the BBC's "In Our Time", which features serious discussion of historical events and people by academics working in the field, and also quirky, thought-provoking programs like WNYC's "Radio Lab" and "This American Life". I'm not so keen on some of the podcasts I typically get from newspapers that gloss over the surface of a subject with little analysis. What other highbrow podcasts are made by people who really know their shit?

What are the perks, pitfalls and perils of owning and operating a laundromat.

I'm thinking about starting up a laundromat. I'm interested in the views of anyone who has ever owned (or knows someone who has owned) a laundromat, with a focus on such things as start-up costs, how profitable (generally speaking) they can be and what I should know about the laundromat trade (perks, pitfalls etc) before going in.

Like the movie Road Trip, but with less Tom Green.

So we're thinking about a road trip south from Vancouver to (maybe) LA...

Weekend getaway locales and lodging near Portland, OR

I'd like to gather some recommendations for good bed & breakfasts or rental cabins for a weekend couple getaway in the Oregon Coast area or other areas of Oregon with great natural beauty. Requirements are listed on the inside.

Roadtrip from San Francisco CA to Vancouver BC, not along the coast or I-5

I'm looking for route ideas and places to stop for a week-long driving trip from San Francisco CA to Vancouver BC, that stays east of I-5. I want to do some back country hiking and hit some hot springs along the way.

Things to do in Vancouver when it rains?

My girlfriend and I are having a great time in Whistler, BC at the moment and are anticipating a great week in Vancouver, starting tomorrow. It is, however, raining. Quite a bit.

Network attached storage for media streaming on Mac

I'm interested in setting up network-attached storage for my media, which mostly consists of digital photos (iPhoto) and 70+ GB music accessed via iTunes. I'd appreciate any links to blogs, etc. discussing this sort of thing for the Mac.

What to do in Ireland for a single traveler?

Lost in Ireland: I'm a thirtysomething single woman who would like to spend some time in Ireland, anywhere from 2 to 5 weeks, probably in March or April. What to do?

Recommend Photography Tours and Travel Workshops

I would like to find out about good providers of photography tours and/or travel-based photography workshops abroad. Preferably, the workshops should be pitched at the level of an intermediate photographer.

What to do in Vietnam and Hong Kong

I'm getting married in February, and the honey moon is planned for Hong Kong and Vietnam (Ho Chi Min). Does anyone have any recommendations on things not to miss in either place? Or ideas of extra special things to do?

So I solved this problem, based on the help given by a few members, who I'm very grateful for. But was it really necessary for a load of people to come into the thread in the meantime and tell me that I didn't know what I was talking about?

The Places Los Angeles Forgot

Tourists coming to Los Angeles usually visit the standard few spots; but there are some amazing urban ruins that even the locals are rarely aware of. From the original site of the Los Angeles zoo (abandonded cages & rock facades now) to the remains of the Sunken City, to the inexorably rusting hull of the 44 year old shipwrecked Greek freighter Dominator, L.A.'s forgotten places are tourist destinations for the intrepid, local & visitor alike. A PDF guide to how to find many of the best (including the Echo Mountain House & The Bridge To Nowhere) can be found here. Many links & inspiration via

say goodnight

The city outside your bedroom window doesn't care if you're lonely. I guess this song is about the feeling of hopelessness. Slightly more uptempo than my previously posted songs, this one features slide guitar, non-slide guitars, drums, piano, strings, and guest appearances by Riadsala (bass) and kerry and casio (background vocal).
