Aboriginal families don't have a monopoly on that...so what really is the point of introducing that topic?

The fact that people were all saying what they were doing at 7 years old; and bringing up as examples things their parents taught them, things they had to play with. Pets they kept. Microscopes. Things they learnt in school. And if this kid came from this kind of environment, those things just aren't relevant.

My fellow Americans, I want to take a few moments of your time to talk to you today about John McCain's decision to call timeout in his campaign.

I just want to say, I agree with his idea wholeheartedly. Wholeheartedly. (beat) It is, finally, a good step in the right direction -- a step that frankly I think we all wish would have happened, somehow, sooner.

any asshole can jump out of a plane or get into a fight; we'd all do it if our lives depended on it.

mentoring underprivileged kids, volunteering at a hospice—these kinds of things, that take real emotional tolls and that you're not going to brag about at a bar over some beers with your brahs, these are the kinds of things that really speak volumes about your inner strength. macho bullshit is exactly that: bullshit.

None of your suggestions will test anything. You're choosing fun things like camping, learning martial arts, and skydiving. Those are recreational things millions of people do casually. Most people dont choose volunteering at a shelter or food bank because these things actually do test your mettle. Find the thing that least attracts you. Do that.

Former vegetarian, agree that you shouldn't say anything to her.

However! I would say something to the caterer, who can't be bothered to know what the ingredients are in the food he serves. That's very poor service.
posted to Ask Metafilter by Solon and Thanks at 6:41 PM on September 13, 2008
There's nothing to be gained by telling her about it. But I totally agree that you need to speak firmly to the caterer.

Servers need to know what's in the food they're serving, or they need to say they don't know and offer to find out. A vegetarian eating bacon may be betraying a cherished principle, which is bad. Someone with an allergy to shellfish could die if they're given the wrong information.
