Last days of the old North (of England)

Last Days of the Old North (of England). A fascinating selection of photographs - mostly from the late sixties/early seventies documenting an era when it truly was grim up north. Made all the more interesting by the erudite and comprehensive commentary by the photographer.

Storyteller in Song

Frank Harte is considered to be one of the greatest balladeers and song collectors in the Irish musical tradition. He specialized in the songs of Dublin City and saw himself as a "storyteller in song".

Blast Off Forever

Since there's a chiptune thread going on, I figured I'd show y'all that Game Boys don't have all the fun! Here's one of the tracks I performed at last year's Blip Festival, written under the constraints of the Neo Geo arcade system -- very much a classic "chiptune" machine, even though it featured snazzy FM synthesis and limited PCM waveform data.

The Accursed Hat

My take on Jofus's cowboy epic. Although I think a song like this demands additional production that I am not able to provide. By all means, feel free to download it, add whip cracking and horse hooves and banshee moans, or swirling guitars, or whatever else might epic this bad boy up.

Never Gonna Stop

I was in a band called gleaner in the late 90's and we recorded four songs at a "real" studio. This was an attempt to make a (power)poppy, happy thing about a stalker-y kind of person. This is the second of the two songs from this session that were mine. The first is here.

(Everybody Likes) Internal Mics

Today cortex and Hoopo wrote, recorded and posted quick songs done with their Mac's internal microphone and GarageBand, a couple of hours apart. I've decided to make it a trifecta.

A tale of two Sonny Boys

It's just gotta make you feel so good to hear (and see) Sonny Boy Williamson sing and blow the harp. Keep in mind, of course, this is Sonny Boy Williamson II we're talking about here. Yes, there were two harp-blowing Sonny Boys, and here's a documentary on the legendary Sonny Boy the first: Part 1 and Part 2.

Driving fast and jazzing it up in the 1920s.

The opening shots of 1920s New York City are wonderful, then you get a zany high-speed Harold Lloyd blazing down the avenues, and that's fun to watch, but the real killer is the horse-drawn trolley absolutely tearing-ass through lower Manhattan, full gallop. Ends badly. Then it's over to San Francisco for one last bit of homicidal vehicular activity with a bus. Well, they sure don't drive like they used to!

Help me hold my head up high

I'm very tall (6'6"), and like most tall people, struggle with posture - I tend to slump my shoulders forward and tilt my head down, especially when standing. Are there any exercises that target that area (upper back, neck) that will pull the shoulders back and make standing/sitting properly "feel right"? (I lift weights regularly, but I think my back is a weak spot - the more I lift, the worse I feel my posture gets.)

Ladies in Waiting...

Before the advent of Cellular phones and the internet, cities around the world were entwined with a series of webs hanging precariously overhead. Their function: to relay messages from one part of town to the next. And the pioneers who were put in charge of this arduous task--the Switchboard Operators. The first choice for this new source of employment was a disappointing failure, not surprisingly, but then a new breed of worker emerged on the scene. These hardworking individuals were the epitome of good behaviour and gritty determination. Patient and understanding, they were always expected to fulfill their tasks, no matter what the cost. And, to their credit--they are still remembered today for the unique place they held in some peoples hearts.

Seeking the Internet Clueless

Have you seen blog threads where commenters seem not to have read the initial post, and are way off topic? I'm seeking more examples of this for my dissertation research. Looking for blogs which have garnered comments similar to those mentioned on the earlier MeFi threads Tuesdays with Maury, Jeremy Jordan Loves Demon Dogs, and How Hawkish. Basically, commenters show up and start commenting as if they haven't read the original post at all, and they don't seem to have any idea what the discussion is about. In many cases they seem to think they're talking to a celebrity, or they are just seeking information in the wrong place.

Cluck-u-Chicken wings sauce?

My friends and I, all hot wings connoisseurs, would love to get our hands on the sauce that Cluck-u Chicken franchises use on their hot wings - specifically the nuclear, thermonuclear, and global sauces. Can anyone point us to a website that tells us what the magic ingredients are? Can any former employees tell us how the sauce is purchased? I'm guessing individual stores get it in powder form and then add water. Maybe someone would be nice enough to transcribe the list of ingredients? Also do Cluck-U locations add the sauce exclusively after making the wings?

spiderman spiderman

Just tonight, I saw this spider in front of my neighbors apartment. it didn't move, and I didn't want to make it move to be honest. Is that thing real? or am I terrified by a toy. I live in Connecticut if it helps to identify.

The great Doc Watson.

Doc Watson: his warm and unprepossessing voice and rolling guitar stylings (both flatpicking and fingerpicking) are treasures of American music. The following video clips will be a treat for any Watson fan, but especially for guitar players: they feature closeup shots of Doc's left hand fretwork as well as insets of his right hand picking. So, without further ado: Deep River Blues, Blue Railroad Train, Black Mountain Rag and Bluebell.

How could I have known that murder could sometimes smell like honeysuckle?

"But, it's a post on film noir!" I told her. She jerked away from me like a startled fawn might, if I had a startled fawn and it jerked away from me. I knew that caving into my desires meant I might lose her. But I didn't care. I went out to the kitchen to make coffee -- yards of coffee. Rich, strong, bitter, boiling hot, ruthless, depraved. I knew she'd be back.
