3 guys, fresh out of college, looking for some financial advice on obtaining a developer for our startup

Two college friends and myself are looking to put together a mobile application start-up. We have the business end of the startup covered, but we need to find a developer to help us out. We need some financial guidance on what to do and what not to do. Should we pay a freelance developer, or bring someone on board with us as a partner?

HTML Email Best Practices

I've been coerced by a client/employer to start using HTML email messages for communications with our customers. Please help me do this in the most net-responsible way possible (or tell me to burn in the special hell reserved for people who put markup on the SMTP wire)

Obama as Political Animal

Making It, in which a young, black, upstart politician rises through the Chicago political scene by having his opposition stricken from the ballot, turning against his endorser, and redistricting himself into a fundraising monster.

We love it. Deal with it.

Okay LA folk... time to tell me... what are your favorite things about/in Los Angeles? Especially your favorite hidden secret stuff that maybe only locals know of. Or super good deals or scenes that make you happy. Stuff that actually makes you stop for a second and think, "Man, I love this place" whether you want to or not.

shine on your crazy tourmaline (or whatever)

When I was a kid living in La Mesa, California, my mother got to poke around in the tailings at local tourmaline and mica mines as part of weekend classes we took at the natural history museum. Are there any kinds of similar gemstone mines anywhere near where I live now - Sacramento, California - that offer similar opportunities?

See How They Run

I was hired as a campaign grunt for my NY Assemblyman's reelection. We were hoping to hire a deputy campaign manager, but most qualified candidates are being sucked up by the Obama campaign. My name is being forwarded as possible DCM. Yikes. Can any of you recommend good books, resources, etc on how to run a successful run such a campaign.

How to write a song and other mysteries

Andrew Bird dishes on recording in the Wilco Loft. Roseanne Cash discusses the songwriting process, and follows up a bit later. Darrell Brown talks about everything, and Suzanne Vega laments being a two-hit wonder. They are all part of the wonderful Measure for Measure blog from the New York Times.

Eat food, not too much, mostly vegetables, and with as little effort as possible

I'm a single guy living alone. I need to start cooking for myself because I spend too much money on food, and most of what I eat is kinda bad for me. However, I hate doing dishes and don't have much time to cook. What foods/recipes would you suggest?

Calling All Tax Pros

My wife and I are both employed full-time and are eligible for health insurance from our employer. We decided to go a different route and chose a High Deductible Health Plan paired with a Health Savings Account. I know that HSA contributions are tax-deductible, but are our HDHP premiums deductible as well?

Magic Fruit Turns Sour to Sweet

Would you ever mix lemon sorbet into a glass of Guinness? With the help of a small red berry called miracle fruit, that's just what one woman did at a rooftop party in Long Island City, Queens, last Friday night. The berry rewires the way the palate perceives sour flavors for an hour or so, rendering lemons as sweet as candy.

Data recovery experience?

So, my friend's harddrive got wiped. Lost a year's worth of high-res artwork. Does anyone have experience with using a data recovery service? I'm looking specifically for price information, how much data was retrievable, and potentially a recommendation.

At least as interesting as a one-link-to-wikipedia post.

Max/MSP is a graphical programming environment primarily used for music, video and multimedia. Max/MSP has sometimes been described as a digital erector set. David Tinapple describes Max in this way: "it's like you're drawing a diagram of what you want the program to do, and then when you're done drawing the diagram you've also sort of accidentally programmed it".

Give me your best book of taxonomies.

So I enjoy books that are an elaboration on theoretical taxonomies such as Roget's International Thesaurus (not the dictionary style) and A Pattern Language. What other books or websites might I enjoy in this vein? Taxonomies on birds or plants are interesting, but I'm looking for things that aren't immediately obvious.
