Also: I can't WAIT to get home and put my thousands-of-dollars'-worth of pastry school to use making A Better Microwaved-in-a-Mug Cake. Brace yourself, Metafilter, for I have ideas.

Alternate drink to coffee/tea?
I have stomach issues, and I swear by cold press coffee. You don't need to by a Toddy system to make good cold press coffee, though it does make it easier. Here's the recipe I use:
1/3 cups ground coffee
2 cups water
Tupperware (or similar container)
An empty bottle
A funnel
A coffee filter
Take the ground coffee. Put in a Tupperware container with 2 cups of *tepid* water; first stir... [more]

Not surprising considering how much they drink. Firemen, I mean.
Hey, it was safe enough for the Ghostbusters. And they were a paragon of safety. I hear the EPA gave them awards and stuff.

The Myth of the Media Myth: Games and Non-Gamers
I've been outside. It's overrrated.
Traditionally Outside receives extremely high ratings by those who like to see others play it, and these people are in many cases comfortably ensconced Inside themselves. Outside was released many years ago, it was in fact the first massively multiplayer game, and yet it has always managed to avoid the double-edged Retro tag. In its favor, continual user updates have kept Outside current; there are always new things... [more]

Meatbomb... over here. I want to tell you something....
SHHHHH, be quiet! stop screaming and waving your arms like that. They'll see you. Just act natural while we slooooowwwwly walk over into this corner where the cameras can't see us. Dude. If you don't stop with the shrieking, you're gonna get us all in big trouble. I know what you saw was horrible, but trust me, it can get a lot worse.
I know I seem a little paranoid....but they're watching.... [more]

SFW, if you W as half-naked warrior
Every time I leave town, when I re-enter I have to stop at a light next to a store that sells computer games. There are three or four monstrous banners hanging on buildings thereabout, advertising for MMORPGs with fantasy art. And I use the term 'fantasy art' advisedly because the graphic decisions are clearly being made by 14-year-old boys. There is one in particular that I can't even look at anymore because it's so awful. I want to take the lady on it aside and give her some candid advice:... [more]

You're so smart you probably think this post is about you
It is time now to talk about The Wheel.
Growing up, my parents had obviously read all the studies about praise and punishment and their effect on a developing child. My father came from a distant, reserved family and was the middle of three brothers. My mother grew up in a close-knit, church going family as an older sister. He went to gradschool for plasma physics and she was the secretary that typed up his thesis.
They obviously disagreed on how... [more]

"Kids on Fire" Doused
I grew up in Bismarck, ND. In a religious family. My parents forced me to be around all kinds of sick fucks like these. I know they meant well, and were only doing what they thought was right, but it had a deep effect on me, and not the way they intended. The priest in their church, Corpus Christi, Fr. Steve Zastoupil, fucked kid(s) and got away with it. I still remember my dad telling me about the church meeting - people still wanted him to be the community's leader! But that's not what this...
