Because there are more important things to do on Friday night

McCain calls time! John McCain has asked that the first presidential debate be postponed and he will suspend his campaign so he can focus on the economy. No response from Obama yet. But it may be due to his approval rating, The latest FOX News/Opinion Dynamics poll shows Obama has taken a 45-39 percent lead.

Sleep schedule engineering?

I currently sleep haphazard hours, for example from 3am-10am. I'd like to change to going to bed by midnight, but I can't seem to get in the habit -- I always trend back to going to bed well after midnight. My working hours are flexible and my sleeping schedule doesn't overly interfere with my productivity, so I don't have external pressure. Any suggestions, resources, experiences that could get me counting sheep earlier?

Where do you put money for baby?

So, we just had a baby and grandmothers keep coming up to us and handing us checks for $50 and saying "This is so you can buy a savings bond for the baby." However, I would like to hear about alternative saving/investing ideas for my daughter.

You're so smart you probably think this post is about you

"You're really smart!" Psychologist Carol Dweck says that praising a child for being smart only teaches the kid to avoid any effort that might fail. "When we praise children for their intelligence, we tell them that this is the name of the game: Look smart, don't risk making mistakes." Malcolm Gladwell chimes in with his thoughts on the importance of being a smart kid, "What a gifted child is, in many ways, is a gifted learner. And what a gifted adult is, is a gifted doer. And those are quite separate domains of achievement."

Savings plan for primary school?

My child will be switching to a very expensive private elementary school. I have already prepaid the tuition for next year, but what is my best strategy to pay for the following years? Specifically, what is the best way to invest about $2K/month so that I can withdraw the needed lump sum once a year? 529 plans are for college expenses only, and Coverdell education-savings account maxes out at $2k/year.

Borders self-publishing and in-store distribution service

Borders and Lulu.com have teamed up to create Border's Lifestyle, a new service allowing anyone to design and publish their own book and have it distributed through Borders stores, even including your own book tour and in-store readings. Is it, according to Ben Vershbow of if:book, "bringing vanity publishing to a whole new level of fantasy role-playing,"1 or a real innovation in book distribution, bypassing the professional gatekeepers?

Personally, I've always found Santa Cruz kind of creepy.

From 1999 to 2004, a slew of bands, either unknown, faintly famous, or about to go on to larger levels of exposure played in the clubs and houses of the Santa Cruz independent "rock" scene, and were recorded for anthropological purposes.
