Ask post: How to ask for a divorce after 26 years?
Don't assume your wife wants the marriage to end. That will get you into trouble. Work from the supposition that however unhappy she is, the marriage and family provides a structure to her life that she's not prepared to live without, and that she'll be devastated, furious, bitter, and fight you every step of the way. Make your plans accordingly. If, in fact, she does take it better than this, then all the better, but you shouldn't count on that. It's pretty rare for both parties to be... [more]

My guess is that you could never get the cashier to understand what you're talking about.

Ask post: Do I need a lawyer for possible SEC investigation?
how do I find someone to represent me for a reasonable fee?

If you are, in fact, someone being investigated for insider trading, shift your focus from "how do I find someone to represent me for a reasonable fee?" to "how do I find the right attorney to represent me?" The right attorney generally means knowledgeable, experienced, etc. And those things don't come at what the ordinary person considers a "reasonable fee.... [more]

Okay, folks, what am I missing?

Well, you're not missing the fact that the apartment is under construction, but you may be missing the possibility that it will still be under contruction on July 1st.

Also, August 1st.

Ask post: Help me feel I made the right decision in moving to NYC.
Basically, the NY-CT-NJ area, and also Boston and Philly are the only remaining bastions of an old form of the male species who is competitive, alpha-leader, living in a capitalist environ. This old form was proud of his heterosexuality and enjoyed public scenarios where this was all hilited, including male-bonding, and misogynist types of offbeat humor, etc. ALL!!! now very politically incorrect.
Enjoy it, you'll soon never see it again, as the left-coast, whiny, subaltern to the... [more]

Ask post: Sex is bad and work is good?
So many interesting questions here -- puritan attitudes to sex, puritan attitudes to work, puritan influences on modern culture -- that it's difficult to know where to begin.

First, the idea of sex as bad or shameful. There is, of course, a long tradition in Western Christianity (going back to Augustine) of seeing sexual desire as shameful and disordered (a symptom of human sinfulness in a fallen world), and the early Puritans share in this tradition to some extent.... Ask post: group job interview
I've had two group interviews and each was very, very different.

The first was obviously laziness on the employer's part. They asked a question, each of us answered it in whatever order we wanted, there was no group interaction-- basically, it was a timesaver. It was really weird and I felt awkward because I didn't feel I was getting enough one-on-one attention to really show my personality. Plus if you weren't one of the first ones to answer, there was this awkward... [more]

Ask post: American seeking work in the Netherlands
Hiya,

Hang in there. Here is a tip: the statement "every bullet point starts with a verb" suggests that you are writing a US-style resume. CVs in the EU have a particular style which is necessary to conform to in order to make the first cut as an applicant, and each individual country has its own preferences beyond that. Here are some guides to writing a Netherlands-style CV I found:

Ask post: Corporate strategies?
These financial arms may have started out as a use of excess capital and/or a vehicle for funding the customers of the industrial segments, but that's not the case anymore. GE Capital, Textron Financial (subsidiary of Textron, which makes Bell helicopters and Cessna airplanes) and GMAC have all expanded into large diversified financial companies who access the capital markets for funding.

The primary driver of this growth was the advantage these large conglomerates had... [more]

Ask post: Transferable Skills Origin
The concept of transferable skills has been an important part of Social Security disability adjudication since 1979 or so. It comes into play when a claimant's impairments prevent her from performing the work she's done in the past and it must be determined whether she can do other work. Obviously, workers with transferable skills can adjust to other work more easily than workers without. In my experience, it is difficult to identify truly transferable skills. The Social Security... Ask post: To church or not to church
You're getting a lot of variety in the answers because the specifics of how weddings are handled are set by the bishop of the diocese you're in. (In other words, there's no single correct answer for the U.S., or any country, really.) Some bishops are controlling, some leave it more up to the priest's judgment, some are conservative, some are liberal. Here in Kansas, for example, there are 4 bishops, and their policies differ. I used to work in a Catholic student center on a college campus,... [more]

Ask post: Urban vs. suburban customer experience
My very best friend is a manager in a retail outlet with about 15 years' experience. I asked her your question and read some responses to her, and without a moment's thought, she spieled off the following:

1) One of the critical factors in a manager's pay and possiblity of obtaining better positions is "shrinkage." There are stores in wealthy areas where there is no security, but theft (shoplifting or internal) is close to nothing. But shrinkage is very high... [more]

Ask post: Where are all the smart people?
We have had some of the same issues where I work - a small trade association with a really fast pace, a ton of work, and not enough time in the day to teach anyone things more than once. My "core" co-workers and I used to have this exact conversation at least once or twice a year...

I think harlequin is correct that compensation is a very important part of the equation. When my non-profit needs to fill positions, the people we really want... [more]
