Dubya mispronounced the word "nuclear"...

Taticular Nucyoular Weapons Dubya mispronounced the word "nuclear" "\nu"cle*ar\" in his speech 17 times this evening (take your own tally here). Wait. That's not a simple mispronunciation. It's a "folk etymology." Thanks, Ike. (Thanks, Homer.) Thanks also to Merriam-Webster. Apparently, this scourge of English is in the dictionary.

Access + Avery = crap. HELP!

So I created an Access database in order to manage the printing of postcards. I need to send out postcards to people on a monthly basis to remind them about an upcoming meeting. I used the Label wizard in Access to create a report that I can use over and over. I am also using the Avery 5389 postcard paper stock. This stock should print two postcards per 8.5x11 sheet. When I look at the print preview the first page looks correct, with 2 sets of data top and bottom. When I print preview (or print) from the second page on, only one postcard, the top one, is printing per page. WTF is going on with Access?

Using a monitor to advertise

We are looking to purchase a flat screen monitor or television that can cycle through files so we can advertise programs at a library. We want to be able to hook a flash drive up to it and use word documents. Any suggestions? Essentially we want to do this without having to ask our IT guys to hook up another PC for us.

Haelp me improve my Axis & Allies strategies.

My friends and I have scheduled a game of Axis & Allies to play in a few weeks time and I'm looking for any advanced tips and strategies to assure sweeping victory for my forces. I've only played it a few times in my life and I've lost more times than I've won so any tips that expert gamers could give me would be great. I'll be playing the original, global map version, not the Pacific or European spin-off versions. I'll also probably be playing as Germany, too. Thanks in advance for any help you can give me!

People Know

From an all-original Power-Pop group I'm currently in called The Rugs. I played bass and keys (Hammond, Wurlitzer, Synth) in the studio but just play the keys on stage. Our longest song clocks in at under three minutes.

bunt cake is a new comic thing that I make out of...

bunt cake: a webcomic thing bunt cake is a new comic thing that I make out of baseball cards. It’s not about baseball, it's just literally made out of baseball cards. So if you like your childhood ephemera gone at with a pair of scissors and then recontextualized against random photographic backgrounds with dialogue juxtaposed there upon, this thing is right up your alley.

Suggestions for the Super Canon?

[Comic Filter] I was recently offered a job that requires a working knowledge of popular American superheroes from the 1930's onward. I've always been a fan of the darker comics (Hellboy, Sandman); now I need to know the difference between Green Lantern and Green Arrow. What should I be reading?

So This Dog Walks into a Bar

Washington State Legislature to Allow Dogs in Bars. And some people are just not happy about it. Dogs in bars. What's the big deal? Is it a health issue? In more civilized places, like Paris, they have been doing it for years - plague free.

... add the phrase, “who are capable of having children with one another” to the legal definition of marriage...

Washington Initiative Requires Proof of Procreation From Married Couples -- in response to a ruling made by the Washington Supreme Court last year stating gay and lesbian couples could be prevented from marrying by the state because Washington has a legitimate interest in preserving marriage for couples who can procreate. It's been accepted by their Secy of State, and only needs signatures now to get on the ballot. Press release here, which adds: The time has come for these conservatives to be dosed with their own medicine. If same-sex couples should be barred from marriage because they can not have children together, it follows that all couples who can not or will not have children together should equally be barred from marriage.

Render unto Bono

Ethically in my opinion, Bono’s tax arrangements are entirely inconsistent with his calls upon government to support anti-poverty drives,” said Richard Murphy, one of three co-authors of the SOMO report (.pdf) on Dutch tax shelters. “You cannot be demanding that resources be allocated to anti-poverty drives and then deny those resources to government.”

Kliban, Tooth and Claw

As a teenager, Bernard "Hap" Kliban joked about wanting to join the Air Force to strafe civilians. Instead, he became a fabulously successful cartoonist best known for his Cats. But his non-cat work was perhaps more influential, and certainly funnier. Gallery 1, gallery 2, gallery 3. (many NSFW)

Data's mad at you, and he's still carrying a grudge.

Data's mad at you, and he's still carrying a grudge. Four years after the movie tanked, Brent Spiner, who portrayed the character of Data, still thinks it's your fault that Star Trek: Nemesis performed poorly compared to its predecessor. "'Let's make a movie for the fans, because that's the people who actually go to see the films.' And what happened?," Spiner rhetorically asks. "They didn't go!" (Other films that opened around the same time included a small arthouse production from An Nua-Shealainn.) It might have instead been that the movie resembled "a 65th class reunion mixer where only eight surviving members show up — and there's nothing to drink." Of course, one can take pity on Spiner; one look at his filmography and realize he's only a few cancellations away from having to sing for his supper. But at least he didn't end up (unjustly) on the cutting room floor (In the meantime, Shatner has his own problems.)

Best brainstorming practices?

A good buddy of mine and I are thinking of starting a business together. We are meeting tonight for a brainstorming session. The goal is just to start the dialog. We are going to take inventory of our strengths and weaknesses and start to throw ideas out there to research in the coming weeks. What are some good things to discuss in this very preliminary meeting? What are some good ways to make sure we make the most of our time tonight?
