What would you do if you were invisible for a day?

I video our kids on their birthday while I ask them random questions. I am looking for more questions to ask them and record (on paper or video). Questions like "will you get married?", "What do you want to be when you grow up?", "what was the best day of your life so far?".

History's most epic flameouts

I'm looking for examples of rants by historical figures, preferably pre-twentieth century, the more unhinged and colorful the better.

The Enduring Consequences of Unemployment

The Enduring Consequences of Unemployment. It is perhaps no surprise that "....workers who lost jobs during the recession of the early 1980s were making 20 percent less than their peers two decades later." Or that unemployment is also bad for your health.... "lA worker laid off at age 40 could expect to die at least a year sooner than his peers." What frames the issue starkly though is that unemployed people gradually lost the ability to read.

What's up with these ipods?

ipod filter...What to do with all these non-working ipods? I have 4 older 20mb & 30mb original style ipods that don't work at all. Won't charge or do anything. Also, I have a 5-6 year old Nano that is in the same boat. Is there any hope for these or are they just trash? Any ideas? Thanks!

Green brands that are truly green?

I'm highly skeptical of a lot of brands that trumpet their environmental friendliness. I know "greenwashing" is rampant. What are some green brands/products that walk the walk?

Best reusable product packaging?

I realized recently that I purchase a certain brand of tomato sauce because underneath the label lies a very attractive mason jar. Do you have products that you buy almost as much for the reusability of their packaging as the product itself? The Altoids tin would be another example.

Help me compile a list of names of iconic fictional characters from popular songs. For example Jimmy Mack, Jumpin' Jack Flash, Maggie May, Absolutely Sweet Marie, Johnny B Goode.

The Lomax Collection -- a 'renewal of the forgotten springs of human creativity.'

NPR: "Folklorist Alan Lomax spent his career documenting folk music traditions from around the world." Now, nearly ten years after his death, thousands of the songs and interviews he recorded are available for free online, many for the first time. "It's part of what Lomax envisioned for [his] collection — long before the age of the Internet." (Mr. Lomax, Previously on MeFi)

KUOW, KCMU and KEXP: a brief history of college(type) radio from University of Washington

KEXP 90.3 FM is a Seattle, WA-based radio station, officially "a service of University of Washington," but it's more complex than that. The first University of Washington radio station started broadcasting in 1952. Five decades, a few station organizational shifts, plus three call letter and frequency changes later, KEXP was (re)born in 2001. Along the way, the station spread the sound of 1990s Seattle indie rock, started streaming "CD quality" MP3 audio of their broadcast in 2000, and they have an ever-growing collection of recordings of live in-station performances, including over 2,000 videos on YouTube.

Less Wrong: The Best Textbooks on Every Subject

For years, my self-education was stupid and wasteful. I learned by consuming blog posts, Wikipedia articles, classic texts, podcast episodes, popular books, video lectures, peer-reviewed papers, Teaching Company courses, and Cliff's Notes. How inefficient! [...] What if we could compile a list of the best textbooks on every subject? That would be extremely useful.
Less Wrong, a community dedicated to rationality, is compiling a list of The Best Textbooks on Every Subject.

The Sisters Of Mercy They Are Not Departed Nor Gone

I have been thinking that mercy is an anachronistic concept that has little application in everyday lives. I'd like to see examples (if any) where mercy may manifest itself in your life or the culture as a whole.

Kyoto tofu

Fresh tofu in Japan is far better than it is anywhere else, and the tofu in Kyoto is generally held to be the best in the country. This is generally attributed to the skill, refined court and/or temple-influenced culture and the quality of the local water. ... During my week in Kyoto, I was able to pursue one family business’s vision of what tofu should be from beginning to end.

Finding the right knife

I'd like to get a chef's knife for my wife, as she has recently developed an interest in cooking. The thing is, she has pretty bad arthritis and needs a knife that would be easy to hold, something with a largish handle. Any suggestions as to brand would be great. Also I should mention we are looking for a decent quality carbon steel type knife.

Whenever Roger claimed to have the superior intellect, Gene would say, “Aren’t you the guy who wrote Beyond the Valley of the Dolls?”

Enemies, A Love Story, an oral history of Gene Siskel and Roger Ebert that first appeared in the premiere issue of The Chicagoan, has been published today as an eBook single by Now and Then Reader. Slate has a lengthy free excerpt, which includes an amusing anecdotal report that the two men began every taping with a game of patty cake. Writer Josh Schollmeyer, executive editor of Playboy, based the 25,000-word article on interviews with 36 participants and observers of the two men who "essentially invented televised film criticism." Help me tame my embarassing mp3 mess

I have a 2002-era problem: a big library of Mp3s, many ripped from physical CDs I own, some downloaded from iTunes, others left over from when I merged music collections with my then partner. They are completely disorganised. Some albums are incomplete, most lack album art, hundreds of individual songs are just kicking around in a big folder of their own. What's the best way to tame the mess? (This question has been asked before, but I imagine best solutions have changed since 2008).
