Queuing questions.
In the sub-basement of what was once an industrial park, the server continued asking questions to the void. The network was long-gone--the ethernet cables vaporized right where they emerged to the surface--but this didn't stop the server. It had a queue.
The third wave of bombings had collapsed the ceiling, destroying almost all the other racks in the room, but the server remained. It was closest to the large metal cage that held the enormous emergency power supply. It... [more]

Pass me the homemade bread.
I don't understand why anyone would buy hummus. It is so easy (kpmcquire posted the basics, I would add some garlic and cumin) and so cheap.
I never buy cookies, I just don't like them. It doesn't take much to whip up a batch of snickerdoodles or chocolate chip cookies once a week for lunches.
I make pasta sauce and soups in bulk and freeze them.
Easy peanut sauce:
Skin and quarter a large onion
Throw it in... [more]

It would be nice to have a auto-resizing feature, such that we could make the square be as big as we like, and then whatever is in it gets shrinked down to 140x140.

Did you feel good about chopping off all your hair?
The biggest change for me was going from wearing it in a ponytail every day to not being able to pull it back anymore. For my entire life (and I mean for as long as I've been styling my own hair, so since about 4th grade), I had worn a ponytail or a bun every day except on very special occasions (relatives' weddings, my prom, etc.). When I cut my hair to chin length, it was no longer long enough to fit into a ponytail. I can put it into pigtails, sort of, although a bunch of hair usually escapes... [more]

Pooped
I have an unhealthy realtionship with popcorn and love my Whirly Pop as suggested by dpx.mfx. However, when I don't want to drag that out and need a junkie's quick fix, I often use
Alton Brown's microwave recipe:
1/4 cup good quality popcorn
2 teaspoons olive oil
1/4 teaspoon kosher salt or popcorn salt
Paper lunch bag
Stapler (I never use staples and just fold the bag over a few times, although they're small enough that... [more]

I've made the Cinnamon Sugar and Spicy Popcorns a lot and they are always a huge hit. I also put them in bags and sneak them into the movies. The first time I did that, I realized how ludicrous it was to buy a small $10 crappy popcorn.

Go with your love to the fields ... ?
I love how everyone gets drawn into an argument they weren't planning to have.
The article is only interesting to the extent that it reveals the psyche of the author: "Don't they know that the mute indifference of nature is as terrifying and empty"
I've long held a pet theory which I call the Background Noise Theory. The background noise theory is quite simple: stupid people, violent people, and people who are... [more]

Life gave me bitter lemonade...now what?
As jamaro says, the pith (white part of the peel under the yellow zest) is terribly bitter.
The zest itself, though, is the difference between pretty good lemonade and the tangy, fragrant lemonade you deserve. The zest is full of delicious citrus oil.
I slice the zest from the lemons before slicing or squeezing them. I use a sharp knife, since it's easier to control that a vegetable peeler. Then with the edge of the knife, trim off any residual... [more]

At the Open Mic (Cortex vs Los Muchachos Mexicanos)
Years ago I used to frequent Open Mics. Sick of top forty and other radio fare, I'd hang out on weekends at Deep Ellum appreciating the rawness of talented young people who had not a snowball's chance in Austin of making it anywhere, but they played their guitars and sang their hearts out for the same reasons people climb mountains or swim the english channel: cuz it's there and they need to do it.
Cortex's original version reminds me of that sound. Only a few people in... [more]

Does bread ever get too stale to be useful for something?
In some other AskMe thread on this very subject (which I am too lazy to look up), someone posted an idea for stale bread which totally rocked my bread world:
- soak stale bread slices in milk for a couple seconds
- sauté in olive oil until golden brown
- serve with honey and walnuts
I can't believe how good this is. I deliberately leave bread out to stale now just so I can eat this.

cat eats owner, news at 11.
Anecdotal evidence: Not far from our country house was a cat lady who was eaten by her cats.
Further useless evidence: None of the nearby dog lovers were eaten by their dogs.
A neighbor of mine had near-feral cats that would wander on to his property and fuck in his barn. They very often killed each other and had a special fondness for gnawing open the heads of other dead cats. On their refrigerator was a chore list, and one item was... [more]
