You're so smart you probably think this post is about you

"You're really smart!" Psychologist Carol Dweck says that praising a child for being smart only teaches the kid to avoid any effort that might fail. "When we praise children for their intelligence, we tell them that this is the name of the game: Look smart, don't risk making mistakes." Malcolm Gladwell chimes in with his thoughts on the importance of being a smart kid, "What a gifted child is, in many ways, is a gifted learner. And what a gifted adult is, is a gifted doer. And those are quite separate domains of achievement."

the hairy aspects of religion

Many religions have prescriptions about hair - hair covering, hair growing, hair shaving... I am interested in knowing about all the various religious aspects of hair. I know bits about some of them, but I'd like to ask the hivemind what you know about hair and religion. Mainly thinking of head hair but body hair is relevant too.

Give a code monkey a ruler...

How do I make code LOOK beautiful? Occasionally, I see these snippets of code where everything looks very aligned and orderly, the variables all seem the same length, the functions are all neatly aligned. My code on the other hand always looks rough and shoddy. What do the people with neat code do to make it look so neat?

dc area part-time planning degrees?

Looking to do a part-time urban planning masters degree or a certificate in the DC area. I'm looking at going back to school part-time (I currently work in the federal government in transportation), and I would like people's thoughts on area schools and their programs (Catholic vs UMaryland, etcetera). Does anyone have positive or negative experiences (especially as a parttime student?), or can recommend any other area schools?

Share your IT infrastructure, hosting and version control thoughts for web development firms?

I work for a small web development company. As we are growing, I have been tasked with looking at a few pieces of our business: - Version Control (Currently we don’t do it. We’re starting to use Subversion at my recommendation) - Development Environments (We don’t exactly have formalized dev/stage/production right now, more like just dev/production…) - Hosting (How we host our different clients varies… too much… we need a good solution) - Infrastructure (i.e. how we host our own email, how we back up our data) I already have some thoughts and recommendations, but they’re based on my personal experiences, so I thought I’d see what other experiences are out there and find out what other people/companies are doing…

Satyajit Ray on Cinema

"In this rare documentary, Satyajit Ray talks about his films. Part 1, 2, 3. Satyajit Ray... is regarded as one of the greatest auteurs of 20th century cinema. Born in the city of Calcutta into a Bengali family prominent in the world of arts and letters, Ray studied at Presidency College and at the Visva-Bharati University. Starting his career as a commercial artist, Ray was drawn into filmmaking after meeting French filmmaker Jean Renoir and viewing the Italian neorealist film Bicycle Thieves during a visit to London. He directed thirty-seven films, including feature films, documentaries and shorts. Ray's first film, Pather Panchali, won eleven international prizes, including Best Human Document at Cannes film festival"

Youtube college lectures

Help me find longer lectures on Youtube. Is there a browsable index of what's on posted on Youtube (something more detailed and descriptive than the left sidebar on the homepage, the channels page, or the few video links that show up on any given page)? I'd like to find something to watch on my ipod at the gym, something to hold my interest for fifteen to sixty minutes, but not videos of laughing babies, music videos or teenagers beating up each other. Doing a search for "university lectures" leads me to the several UC Berkeley lecture series and the inspiring lecture from the fellow with pancreatic cancer. Is it possible to move beyond that into other college lectures or even multipart courses (arts or science), discussions, longer films, the unexpected? How do I find them?

Best ways to prepare slabs of chicken?

I've been trying to make chicken dishes that don't rely on the usual pasta or rice+sauce+chicken combination. I have not been successful. I'm looking for chicken recipes and techniques that rely less on pasta and rice, and more on imparting flavor to the chicken itself.

Help me find a suitably "butch" gift for my new girlfriend.

I've been dating a really wonderful woman and it seems we have fallen very much in love with each other. She doesn't wear makeup, or jewelry aside from two small, non-dangly earrings in each ear, and isn't particularly "girly" in any other respect, so I'm kind of at a loss as to what to get her for Valentine's Day. I'd like it to be something she can wear all the time, and since it's our first together, I'd like to make it something memorable, but any kind of flashy jewelry would probably be met with a luke-warm reception. I've been thinking about some kind of "butch" friendship bracelet, or something like that, but the ones I've found are generally pretty shoddy and cheaply made. She's been talking about wanting some color on her body - either painting her toenails or getting a tattoo - so something colorful without being super-feminine might be nice. Any suggestions? (BTW: She's in her 30's.) Thanks.
