Rhetorical Terms

"...the aspiring speaker needs no knowledge of the truth about what is right or good... In courts of justice no attention is paid whatever to the truth about such topics; all that matters is plausibility..." A Glossary of Rhetorical Terms with examples.

March '79 to October '97: One Mans Polaroid Collection

What does a man do during the last 20 years of his life? We learn what every day was like for this unnamed soul who lived through the death of John Lennon, was there for the biggest television experience ever and who saw many presidents inaugurated and witnessed some of them shot.
It might have been because of the holidays or just to fit in but sometime around the early 80's he began smoking. Throught the 90's his health declined and eventually the illness took over.
What must we think about the Star Trek fan with a surreal taste for art and who loved pasta? I'm not sure, but I am certainly thankful for the images.

Are laws public domain?

In the spirit of those who have patented living organisms, the State of Oregon Legislative Counsel Committee is demanding $30,000 from Justia.com for the right to publish Oregon Revised Statutes -- the laws of Oregon -- on their website for two years.

Most amazing places in NYC to hang out?

What are the most incredible, maybe slightly offbeat, places in New York City to hang out? Stunning rooftop bars, strange nighttime museums, secret gardens, bizarre burlesques, etc. and more all welcome. Alcohol availability a plus.

How would a contractor paid a weekly rate by Company X make ownership distinctions between works created for X and works for others?

I've been offered a new contract/consulting job where I would be paid not by the hour or for a specific deliverable, but at a flat weekly rate. Under this arrangement, how might I make intellectual property distinctions between works that will belong to this client, and outside works I may do for myself or others?

Best ways to prepare slabs of chicken?

I've been trying to make chicken dishes that don't rely on the usual pasta or rice+sauce+chicken combination. I have not been successful. I'm looking for chicken recipes and techniques that rely less on pasta and rice, and more on imparting flavor to the chicken itself.

open source powerpoint tips?

I saw a presentation given with Apple's Keynote in which the text that accompanied each slide was not shown on the overhead projector, but was visible on the laptop used by the presenter. How do I do that? And bonus points if you can tell me how to do that with open office, a pdf file, or some other non-keynote piece of software.

They carried the joys and sorrows of those living with the sea

Iwase Yoshiyuki "In the late 1920s, young Yoshiyuki received an early Kodak camera as a gift. Since the main livelihood of the town came from the sea, he gravitated there, and soon found a passion for "the simple, even primitive beauty" of ama – girls and women who harvested seaweed, turban shells and abalone from beneath the coastal waters." "By the late 1960s, they had disappeared. This body of work stands as the final, most comprehensive visual document of the life and work of these divers." [NSFW]

No Limit Honeymoon

No Limit Honeymoon. My new wife and I would like to go on a 2 - 2 1/2 week honeymoon. We will go anywhere in the world and want somewhere outside of the States or Europe. We will spend up to 20k US. She is not much into roughing it. We would like to be 50% active, and 50% chilling. We like to be pampered, we like to eat, we like to party, we like to swim, we like to relax. Where would you recommend we go based on the above? Hawaii, Australia, Thailand, Croatia, Zanzibar? Anyone have a outstanding honeymoon story or all around awesome place(s) they have visited? Set us up with an outstanding trip that will not be forgotten.

Best computer buying/selling strategy?

What's the best strategy for buying new laptops and selling old ones? I usually buy a new computer once every five years or so and then sell my old one. Say I spend $3000 for a new one and sell the old one for $300. Would I be better off buying a new one every year and selling the old one each year? In other words, would I get more for the old one that it would make up for the depreciation in waiting five years?

Troubled Teen, Perplexed Parent

My soon-to-be 14 year old is freaking me out. He has setup elaborate fictional profiles online that seem to be begging for sympathy, attention, shock, and probably many other things. These profiles are graphic and tell fictional tales of an abused childhood and severe mental illness(es) including OCD, bipolar, depression, and ADD. I need a lot of advice on how to proceed!

Affordable Ireland Accomodations

Traveling to Ireland in Sept. Will be renting a car in Dublin and seeing the countryside for a week. Any suggestions for affordable (<100 eu per person per night) castle accommodations? Recommendations on B&B's also welcome. Also, what are the must-see, non-"touristy" attractions.

Talking to the dying

A good friend just received a brain cancer diagnosis with an estimated one year survival time. She wants to talk about death and time. She thinks I have something to teach or tell her worth hearing. I'd like to be helpful, but have no confidence in my ability to say or do anything meaningful. What I've said so far she appreciates. What can I read that might help me frame discussions. I don't need pop psychology stuff, or advice dealing with the health care system or funeral arrangements. I like the idea of Zen notions of letting go but am too ignorant to know what to say. Advice, experience, suggestions for gathering information please.

GiveWell, or Give 'em Hell?

Is This Transparency? OP with very slim, one-year posting history asks a question about finding a good charity in AskMe, just prior to year-end tax-decision time. Newly registered responder posts a newly formed charity-aggregator/evaluator organization, without mentioning that he is, apparently, one of the two founders. Self-promotional setup leading to self-link? Or am I being too cynical?

I've been doing the shirt thing for a while now, but I've decided to try a different creative approach. Here's hoping you find them amusing.
