Mark Twain:
"Total abstinence is so excellent a thing that it cannot be carried to too great an extent. In my passion for it I even carry it so far as to totally abstain from total abstinence itself."

How do they make them shows on the teevee?
If you want to learn about U.S. TV story construction from the fly-on-the-wall perspective, besides reading screenwriter blogs (e.g. John August, Alex Epstein, John Rogers, Ken Levine, etc.), definitely check out the Battlestar Galactica podcasts, particularly the writers' room recording: three hours of the writing staff beating out story arcs for Season Two. An extraordinary resource.
(BTW: Canadian/British shows are often written differently, in a... [more]

Lookin' for a new external that will satisfy
I absolutely LOVE my Wiebetech Toughtech Mini 2.5" enclosure. I bought it to hold the 100GB harddrive I pulled out of my Macbook Pro when I upgraded it to a 160GB drive.
This enclosure can be bus-powered over either Firewire400, Firewire800 *or* a USB2 connection, and is utterly rock solid. It also has an external power adapter, in case your bus source cant adequately power the drive. I've been carrying my Toughtech Mini in my backpack every day for the past year,... [more]

TYPE HARD OR GO HOME
I loved my Model M, and it's the one thing I miss from using a PC since I switched to the Mac. If someone would just make a Model M (five pounds of steel and clicky) for the Mac, I'd pay almost any price.
SansPoint, check out the Unicomp native-USB 104-key models (as I mentioned above). They're around $60-70, but worth it.
On the Mac side, just physically swap the "ALT" and "WINDOWS" keycaps (if you care... [more]

Macbook Pro Newbie
I'll see what I can do to get you informed about mac applications. For starters, iusethis is a great source for information about the mac software community. Think of it as Digg meets Cnet; it's a massive tag-based index of applications that users are able to mark that they use. This results in incredible utilitarian lists of the most used apps, hottest apps, and newest apps. It's an invaluable resource, really. For example, many of the programs I will mention later on will not be free (e.g.... [more]

crossword
I'm a crossword fanatic. As Pinto says, a huge part of the game is knowing the threes and fours that are likely to spring up. After a while, you'll learn that if you see the word 'Georgia' in a clue, you need to immediately fill in SSR; if you see 'Mission Impossible', you fill in LALO. After a while, you'll get a feel for the types of puns and synonyms that are used. Is 'listing' a clue? Try putting in SLANTED or ATILT. That's a very common clue. A friend of mine... [more]

That's what we need. A YouTube Bible, with videos of different lengths making up the entirety of the verses.
YouTube 3:51 - And, yea, though the kittens did fall from many things, the light upon the wall remained uncaught.

AskMe is about being helpful. If your answer is correct but unhelpful (for example, by being phrased in such a way that only someone who already knew the answer would be able to understand it, and hence not need the answer), then it's useless. Deletions on AskMe are not... [more]

Work travel advice, hard learned lessons?
Josh -- Welcome to the world of the weary business traveller!
For travelling with a laptop and other electronics, I'd get a large laptop bag that's perfectly sized to fit under seat-backs. I've got one, but it's a huge old Port bag... I don't even know where to look for 'em these days.
Second, I'd never, EVER check baggage. Even when travelling with suits, I don't... I put shirts, shoes, and slacks in a folding, hanging suit carrier bag (which... [more]

Socially liberal, economically conservative
You know, I'm seeing a lot of, "Libertarians are N. Every libertarian I've ever met is N."
Fuck that shit.
It's nothing more than a name-calling pile-on. When Republicans slander liberals by pointing at the wacko fringe of the party and singing, "You're all like that guy!" we rightly object. Give it a rest.

I am very happy to read these posts. It's not easy to have notoriety and pretty much have accurate conceptions in the public mind. Virtually everything said her about me is accurate.
I never wanted a spotlight or fame. I built computers and handed out schematics. I at first said "no" to starting Apple because I loved my work at HP (Calculators) and could always design on the side.
I have always been an amateur comedian. I had this idea... [more]

Sacrifice friendship, or endure constant pain?
I've been in your shoes and it blows. I don't understand the feeling of "betrayal" either, but if you still have feelings for her (and it sounds perfectly natural since you guys get along so well) the best thing to do is to put some distance between you two. It sounds like she cut off communication hoping you'd get over it or find something worthy of that kind of attention, but you didn't, and you're just hurting yourself hanging out with her now since it's clear she will never...
