I have just found out I'm a big fan of post apocalyptic fiction books. Somehow I like the idea of an individual or small group of survivors almost alone in the world trying to find out what the hell happened to the planet and fighting for their survival. What are some good books and movies the hive mind can recommend?

I returned two items to a store and was refunded $37 extra. The refund did go back to my credit card and is on my statement. Will the company notice and take it back?

Give me your baby hacks! My wife and I are expecting our first child in November. What tips and tricks can you offer us to make our lives a lot easier? For example, a friend of mine swears that putting a crying baby in front of a mirror will cause it to stop. Another uses noise cancelling headphones to temper the noise from his shrieking child. I am looking for hacks on everything from diaper changing to stroller modifications. Make our lives easier as we enter into parenthood.

Does anyone know a way to stop icons from bouncing on the OS X doc? I'm NOT talking about unchecking "animate opening applications" in the dock preferences. That only stops opening-app bounces. I want to stop warning bounces, too. They drive me crazy. Please note that I'm using an INTEL Mac (Leopard). I've only been able to find solutions for PowerPC Macs.

My best friend and I are sake (rice wine) lovers. Not lovers, because he's a guy. And ugly. But he's a great guy and I'd like to buy him some top quality traditional sake and a set of cups and bottle.

In 1997, the ABC gave
John Safran, "Australia's most exciting guerilla filmmaker", his big break on
Race Around The World. Although he came last in the competition, it's not too hard to fathom why he won the popular vote, with these submissions:
Don't screw with the rules in Japan,
The ambulance chaser (Mumbai),
Anarchy in the Renault family hatchback (Bristol),
The right to bare grudges (Cote d'Ivoire),
Mum I'm not Jewish any more (Cote d'Ivoire),
Father Pino vs the Devil (Sicily),
Mohammad's guide to busting a move (Lebanon),
Football's my religion (Jerusalem),
The series of unfortunate events and
The happiest place on earth, my butt (Disneyland). youtube; each ~6 minutes

“We realised that life is too short to read all the books you want to and we never were going to read these ones.”
Research confirmed that “many regular readers think of the classics as long, slow and, to be frank, boring. You’re not supposed to say this but I think that one of the reasons Jane Austen always does so well in reader polls is that her books aren’t that long”.
The first six titles in the
Compact Editions series are
Anna Karenina,
Vanity Fair,
David Copperfield,
The Mill on the Floss,
Moby Dick and
Wives and Daughters.
Each has been whittled down to about 400 pages by cutting 30 to 40 per cent of the text. Words, sentences, paragraphs and, in a few cases, chapters have been removed.

What's the most exciting novel you've ever read? I mean this in the simplest sense: an exciting plot. I'm looking for page-turners. Novels that keep you on the edge of your seat and refuse to let you sleep until you finish them. I'm looking for genre novels -- but I don't care what genres: Mystery, thriller, sci-fi, etc. (though sci-fi/fantasy has been done-to-death here, so I'm really more interested in other genres.) Oh, I care about words. So no matter how exciting, I'll quit reading if the prose is crappy.

I want to seriously improve my football (soccer) skills. I play fairly often in a mixture of 5-a-side games and an 11-a-side team, but my skills are improving very slowly as the games don't involve any training, just playing and you only get the ball for a fraction of the game. I was hoping for suggestions to make up some kind of training plan of my own as well as getting a better understand of football tactics.

New
Canadian music is infiltrating your culture with its
neo-retro ways, and you may not even know it!
Hot Hot Heat is too dance-rocky for it's own good, Joy Division-loving
the Stills are constantly mistaken for New Yorkers (thanks to touring with Interpol), and certainly
Stirling are too epic to be anything but Cure-loving Brits! Watch out for the seditiously warm synth-pop of
Stars and the society-destroying rock-folk of lesbian siblings
Tegan and Sara. While you're at it, keep tabs on Toronto super-supergroup
Broken Social Scene and the quirky, danceable girl-rawk of
Metric. This is the cell of the retro rock revolution you really need to pay attention to. The Strokes and their ilk have nothing on the Canucks.
