Angola, it's not like they said

Fascinating account (w/ pix) of a motorcycle journey through Angola. Stumbled onto this from the Black Flag forums and have not been able to stop reading it.

The financial turmoil of 2007-?

The financial turmoil of 2007-?: a preliminary assessment and some policy considerations (pdf) "All episodes of financial distress of a systemic nature, with potentially significant implications for the real economy, arguably have at their root an overextension in risk-taking and in balance sheets in good times, masked by the veneer of a vibrant economy. This overextension generates financial vulnerabilities that are clearly revealed only once the economic environment becomes less benign, in turn contributing to its further deterioration." A scholarly, sane, relatively brief, accessible-to-the-layperson, and mostly apolitical look at the current turmoil.

Pulp Shakespeare

Continue! Ah, but now thy tongue is still.
Allow me then to offer a response.

Swimming in oil?

I'm trying to visualize the amount of oil the world has consumed since 1900 and, just for fun, how much there is left ...using bodies of water as a reference.

Big book of algorithms

If you could use a great big free handbook of discrete math and algorithms, Jörg Arndt's fxtbook wants to be your friend. Plain text table of contents to whet your appetite.

Reach For the Lasers

The bastard offspring of New Age, Techno, Industrial and Acid House, trance is one of the most popular and most maligned musical genres of the 21st century. Trance can be bombastic or delicate, psychedelic or rock and roll, spacey or deep, euphoric or dark, commercial or underground, lush or funky, melodic or monotone, hard or laid back. You can try making some yourself with this toy, or go in depth with this tutorial. You can find it online, but if you want to really experience it, you need to hear it at a club.

identify this painting?

Can you identify this painting (164KB, flickr) for a friend? She's had it as wallpaper for awhile but doesn't know where she got it from. It looks Picasso-esque to me but I don't think it is him, not that I've got a great knowledge of his work.

Tomb find and interactive mummies

A few days ago archaeologists discovered what is one of the most intact ancient Egyptian tombs ever found. If you would like to get in on the mummy fun from your own computer, there are several quaint things you may do on the internet; most satisfactorily, you can stick a hook up Seneb's nose and slice up his brain.

Examples of Adaptation of Farming to Extreme Climates

I'm looking for historical accounts and analysis of the adaptation of farming to extreme climates. A few weeks ago I spent a relaxed Sunday afternoon learning about early settlement, farming, and society in Iceland. Fascinating stuff! I now have the opportunity to research the adaptation/failure of farming in extreme climates for a term paper.

Questions about poetry.

I don't know shit about poetry but have been enjoying Leonard Cohen, Charles Bukowski, Charles Simic, and Robert Creeley for years. (I mostly like works about relationships, romance, love...) Who else should I read? Also, in addition to "practice", how does one get better at reading/writing poetry. Can you also recommend journals / anthologies / web sites / quarterlies?

Python version of this Perl 4-line regexp script?

Convert perl to python: I am very comfortable with regular expressions but I need help converting an implementation of them from Perl to Python. I have an example Perl script below that opens a file, scans through it one line at a time, does a s// replace, then finds a string in the result and stores it in another variable. I would love to just have a working Python version of this for my edification-- and if you have any "Perl to Python" tutorial links I'd love to see them.

Best language for parallel code

I have an embarrassingly parallel problem for which I currently have a working algorithm prototyped in a relatively high level language (IDL). It's time I properly parallelised it however, and also rewrote it with something I can optimise a bit more easily. What languages and resources are available?

The rest of the atom is empty. I tried to picture it, and I couldn't. So I put together this page - and I still can't picture it." Awesome illustration on perspective and particles - *warning* very wide page, may be dangerous to your browser. Also, the relative size of planets (via the always interesting 37signals blog.)
