Any travel suggestions for the central coast of California? With dog.

Need a quick getaway from LA after I meet several deadlines next week. I'm planning to visit a friend in Cambria Friday and Saturday but would like to hit the road and see Monterey, Carmel and/or Santa Cruz (or somewhere else you might suggest in the area) on Sunday.

Hit me with your best snack salad.

I am on a quest to find recipes for things that are somewhat "salads" but that can function as a refrigerated snack that lasts for a few days after preparation. I don't know if there's a better term for this than "snack salads," but that's the purpose it would serve for me.

World Jollof Rice Day, you say?

Today is World Jollof Rice Day. Jollof rice is a traditional West African dish, but not a humble one. Subject of #JollofGate, the outraged social media response to chef Jamie Oliver's patently inauthentic recipe, aficionados debate the merits of special ingredients. Others prefer joining the loud brangling online over Ghanaian vs Nigerian Jollof. Regardless of your beliefs, join the world today in celebrating the tasty goodness of this much loved dish.

How can I help my boys grow up to be healthier happier feminist men?

Inspired by the EL thread and the askme on it after following this moving thread about male socialization, what can I do as a parent (specifically a mother) do to help my sons grow up to be happier and healthier feminist men in a toxic patriarchy? What resources and strategies can I add to my parenting toolbox?

Have you seen this woman?

On April 3, 1946 a young girl was photographed looking out over the ruins of the Warsaw ghetto. Sixtynine years later this picture has gone viral in Poland leading to a search for this unknown woman, who if still alive, would be in her eighties and could be living anywhere in the world.

...before he can tell her about his favourite bukowski quote

Feminist writer Anne Thériault of bad-date-tweeting fame posted a series of tweets about the deadly feminist animal in her natural habitat. Less than an hour later, voice actor D.C. Douglas transformed the static text into a David Attenborough-esque documentary narration.

I need a project. Or a job. Or a hobby. Or SOMETHING ... at home

One of my children received a complex developmental diagnosis this year, which unfortunately means I won't be going back to work as planned. Now that we're out of the "total panic" phase and into the "settling into a routine" phase, I don't have a lot to do, and I am BORED OUT OF MY MIND. I'm flailing between the universe of "pick anything you want!" and "meet these constraints where you have to do it from home." I need some kind of intellectual work -- paid or unpaid -- to give me focus, a goal, and something to do. You guys know me pretty well; I thought you could help me narrow it down. Details within.

I scream, you scream

Summer's upon us, and that means it's time to wallow in delicious ice cream over at Serious Eats. Learn how to make sorbet, sherbet, gelato, fro-yo, and soft serve. While you're at it, mix in the best ways to swirl in chocolate, nuts, and booze. Top it off with myth-dispelling advice from the pros on when to use corn syrup, age an ice cream base, add eggs to a recipe, incorporate a stabilizer, and create a smoky finish. If the ice cream sounds like too much work, make a no-churn Key Lime Pie instead. For you vegans out there, we've got something for you too.

Spectacular Spectacular!

I would like to watch some BIG DUMB* MOVIES that look good and go down easily—modern epics, dramas, and adventure movies with an old-school sensibility. Cheesy sentimentality and/or problematic politics are okay. Bonus for scores that tell you exactly how to feel, old-fashioned adventure, lush scenery, sweeping romance, shameless tearjerking, improbable history, etc. Basically, spectacle-style pictures that are really good at being spectacles, if not at being great movies.

The best non-fiction I ever read. Help me find more.

I recently finished The Making of The Atomic Bomb by Richard Rhodes and it is probably the best non-fiction book I ever read. I picked it up based on the overwhelmingly positive reviews not because I have any particular interest in WWII or wars in general.

It's too early to share with parents, friends, and colleagues, but just the right time to open up to a bunch of internet strangers. Mrs. BJW and I are 9 weeks pregnant. (YAY!!) I would like to ask the hive for help finding 2 things: First, a website that I saw referenced here but can no longer find. Second, the current best "What to Expect" book out there.

Ultra-beginner-level interior furnishing/decorating/design advice?

I'd like my home to look well-put-together, but my interior decorating ability never advanced beyond college-dorm level. I have no idea where to start, and I'm a little overwhelmed thinking about it. I need the most basic, beginner-level, baby-steps, for-dummies advice you've got.

If you could only read one parenting book.. (Or two or three)

My wife and I are talking about starting a family soon. I'm excited but extremely nervous and also fairly clueless about pregnancy, babies, and children. I've started looking for books to prepare, but there's so (so) much out there, I'm not really sure where to start. Realistically, I expect to read 2-3 books.

I loved A Song of Ice and Fire, The Kingkiller Chronicle and the Stormlight Archive. I'm in book 2 of the Mistborn series and it's enjoyable but not as good as the previous. Where should I go next? Needs to be on Audible (I have a 2 hr commute every day).

European sunscreen > U.S. sunscreen. Can this American buy it legally?

Readable yet extremely comprehensive history books

I just finished reading The Emperor of All Maladies: A Biography of Cancer again and it was just as incredible if not more so the second time around. I'm wondering if there are other nonfiction books of similar quality and comprehensiveness for other topics - primarily looking for a diabetes book but also interested in any other comparable books.

As an added bonus, they converted the ingredients to proportions for easy scaling. Cheers!

Japanese Comfort Food

A friend of mine is having to be in the hospital for the next ten days or so. I've promised him I'll make him dinner when he's out, and his request is for Japanese comfort food. I've done some googling and ramen and/or miso soup was already going to be on the menu, but I'm really interested in vetted/actually-from-Japan recipes and I don't have enough knowledge of Japanese cuisine to evaluate them.

Fantasy novels with strong female characters

I finally have enough time to read books again. My favorite books to read are fantasy with magic. I don't dislike sex in books, but I'm specifically not looking for erotica disguised as fantasy. My favorites have been The Witches of Eileanan and the Rhapsody series. I prefer to read female authors- can't stand GRRM, and am not super into Sci Fi. Can you help me find interesting and fun things to read?

But I have nothing to read no longer an excuse

Why read an average book when you could read a great book? With so little time to read, why waste time on a so-so book? But how do you find the best books to read? Most people read whatever they stumble across at the moment. Other folks read book reviews and get recommendations from friends. Even fewer join book clubs.
For those despairing of finding enough decent science fiction to read, James W. Harris sets out how to find the best science fiction books to read, including his own classics of science fiction list.

Frozen fruity goodness

The Science of the Best Sorbet
Though it's just as easy to make as ice cream, sorbet is a little less forgiving—its lack of fat and eggs mean you have to be more careful with your recipe. Now the good news: sorbet has a science like anything else, and once you learn a few things you'll be ready to turn any fruit into fresh, full-flavored, and creamy sorbet—something so creamy you might confuse it for ice cream.

Tana French readalikes, or other good, character-driven mysteries?

I'm not usually a mystery reader, but I recently read In the Woods and The Likeness, by Tana French, on a friend's recommendation. I loved them, but I'm not familiar enough with the genre to find others like them. What I like about them: strong characters, suspense that is mainly psychological in nature, clear prose. I also enjoyed the Stieg Larsson books; other Scandinavian mysteries have been hit or miss. Any recommendations, MeFites?

But I really want blogs, Tumblrs, Twitters, websites, etc. that are funny or snarky or absurd, as well as smart, feminist/liberal, crunchy, scientific, and welcoming of a variety of backgrounds/lifestyles. July 30, 762 to February 13, 1258

In two weeks of blood and fire, one of the greatest intellectual and cultural legacies the world had ever seen came to an end. Crushed under the hooves of a mighty foe (in one case literally), a dynasty, an empire, a city, and a library all disappeared. It was perhaps the swiftest and most complete collapse of a civilization ever, still felt to this day. Now, how about for some context?

Sources for modern clothing patterns/fabrics?

For anyone with sewing experience, can you recommend sources for modern clothing patterns and fabrics? For style, think Anthropologie, but the less frippy pieces - simple, easy, drapey. For fabric, I'd like soft, high-quality cottons in a good range of colors. (I never see that kind of thing at fabric stores, so I'm guessing I'll have to order online.)

The good news is that a lot of awesome action movies have been made over the past 25 years. The bad news? Not all of your favorites will be on this list."
