How can I test and build up my strength, tenacity, and courage. As far as I can see, there are limited opportunities to test my mettle in the corporate world ( besides calling out some a**hole in the boardroom ). I am looking for things to do that will put me to the test and see what I am made of. I am thinking along the lines of CrossFit, 'Man vs. Wild', high stakes negotiation, or skydiving. The only time I can really remember being tested was a fight in 10th grade and the hazing I went through in University. How can I earn a badge of honor when I spend most of my time in a cubicle. I would prefer answers that would not involve the risk of certain death, although I wouldn't mind getting the living sh*t scared out of me. I also wouldn't mind pushing my mind or body to the limit. I am willing to travel, spend money, bleed, and cry.

With all
this talk of
Sandy Smith (epilepsy warning on that last link), his
greatest project still wants for submissions. Smith:
In May 2007 I commissioned an essay from a supplier of tailor-made academic essays. I requested a 1500 word essay that was to "prove that Junior... is the best film ever made." This essay was to make reference to various writers including Freud, Barthes, Baudrillard and Jameson in proving it's case. Yes,
that Junior.

On city sidewalks, when strangers pass each other, why do they sniffle? Walking toward each other, we size each other up at a distance of 25 ft, then avert eyes, then 10 ft, then avert eyes and as we pass *sniffle* or quick intake of air through the nose that makes a sound.
What does this mean? It seems wholly subconscious. Are we tracking a scent? Are they sticking their nose in the air in an aristocratic air of disapproval?
I've noticed this phenomenon, so I consciously avert my sniffling because I don't even know why it happens, or what it means. But now I hear it from passers-by all the time. It's definitely not allergies; it seems very focused.

Uh oh, you smashed a dish while you were washing up. But you don't get upset, because you know what to do with the pieces. Being both cultured and crafty, you not only know about the
long and illustrious history of mosaic art but also that you can make mosaics from china and ceramic shards as well as
pebbles,
beads (new or removed from old jewelery),
shells,
marbles, or even
lego or
Scrabble tiles. So you take those pieces of your broken plate (and others that klutzy you has broken in the past) and,
following some basic instructions, make
numbers for your house, a
fireplace surround, a
birdbath, a
flowerpot, a
table or
two or four, a
tray,
picture or
mirror frames, a
wall mural/homage to Hitchcock, or even
a floor. By now you're wishing you had a spare
basilica or
Roman villa so you could really go nuts.
And, besides planning on picking up some thrift shop china, you're eyeing that 48-piece reindeer-and-elves Christmas dinnerware set your mother-in-law gave you a few years back and thinking it's really too bad you're so clumsy and likely to break it in the very near future.

I'm looking for more riddles like "the seagull sandwich" and "the guy who goes to work every day, takes the elevator to the 35th floor, gets out, walks the stairs to the 38th except when it rains" and the one where Romeo and Juliet are dead on the floor surrounded by shards of glass.
Though preferably harder and better.
Thanks!

Who you are is what you listen to:
Prof. Adrian North of Edinburgh's Heriot-Watt University recently published results of what the Beeb calls "the largest study of its kind" linking music listening habits to personality characteristics. His breakthrough conclusions? Heavy metal listeners, contrary to public perception, are not a "suicidally depressed" or a "danger to themselves and society in general. But they are quite delicate things."

More good stuff for people who like visual ("optical") illusions (
previously): A nice Scientific American
article, a particularly
creepy illusion, and a
link to the "Best visual illusion of the year" contest. Given that the eye/mind/brain is so easy to trick, a person might wonder what's
really out there in the world.

Get your learn on. 180+ ways of investigating the human brain = hours of fun for the whole family.
Thanks to an innocuous question by a 5 year old, my entire evening is now being spent investigating and discussing the structure and workings of the human brain. This flash site lets you explore the workings of the brain according to 12 subject areas (each with subtopics which are not included in the "180" count), within each of which are 5 levels of organization from social to molecular, within each of which are three levels of explanation (beginner, intermediate, and advanced.) discovered via Wikipedia.
