I love mayonnaise. I just
loooooooove mayonnaise. I love it on burgers, on sandwiches, and in deviled eggs. I love it in tuna salad, egg salad, and potato salad. I
may have, on occasion, eaten it by itself, but I admit nothing. But what other dishes highlight the diversity and deliciousness of mayonnaise? What can I do to up my mayonnaise quotient? What are your favorite mayonnaise recipes? Is there such a thing as gourmet mayonnaise? Can I find high-class, fancy mayonnaise created by mayonnaise connoissiers? I want to expand my mayonnaise horizons!

I love Erik Larson's The Devil in the White City. It's a non-fiction book about Chicago in 1893 which reads much like a novel. I'd like to read other books written in the same novel-esque style about some other cities or historic events. Know of any novel-like non-fiction reads?

I have a cranky oven that seems to set off the smoke alarm whenever I cook anything above 350 degrees. What easy, 8 ingredients or less recipes can you recommend that use low temps, say 200-300 degrees, in the oven?

After 50 years of success, my Mom's favorite chocolate cake recipe is now failing to meet expectations. Betty Crocker blames Crisco, and Crisco denies blame. Not only do the cakes not rise like before, they tend to sag in the middle. It's a devil's food recipe from the original BC Cookbook, and she has been using the same ingredients forever. I calibrated the oven, and even watched her make one to insure it wasn't due to an error by a sometimes forgetful 84 year old baking Ninja. Any ideas on how Mom can get her Mojo back?

In many of Dickens' novels he talks about "punch". Hot steaming punch on a cold night around the fire. Cold punch at a summer garden party. A ruffled character smelling of tobacco and punch. How was "punch" typically made, what's in it and why was it the popular drink of choice, indeed almost a "punch culture".

Pony request: For years, Thinkblank ran their great Secret Santa, where people would put in their wish list of <$20 gifts from a website and then a computer would randomly couple participants together and they would accordingly send gifts but wouldn't know who the giver was until six months later. But, sadly, Thinkblank is defunct.
Possible to do a secret santa on Metafilter?

I have a
small double or three-quarter size bed. Most people seem to prefer an underblanket (or mattress warmer) to the traditional electric overblanket and I think I would too. But should I get a single-size and leave a few inches of bed unheated? Or get a double-size and wrap the excess around the side of the mattress?

I'd like to build a clock that makes shifting to daylight savings time unnecessary by instead gaining or losing a bit of time each day as appropriate for the season so that when the second Sunday in March and first Sunday in November roll around it's already in sync. Setting aside the logistics of making this work from a societial point of view, how would you do it technically? Something like leap seconds or leap minutes? Or smaller changes on a more constant interval?

Is it possible to export pictures from Microsoft Word documents? I need to re-color a graphic that's been inserted into a Microsoft Word 2003 document. Unfortunately, that is the only copy I have of the graphic. Word doesn't seem to provide a way to color over graphics. Even getting it into Paint would work fine--but first I need to get it there. Am I screwed?

Suppose you killed somebody...
How would you dispose of the body without getting caught? Would you dump it somewhere? Bury it in the backyard or basement? Dissolve it in lime? What? What would your master plan be that would allow you to get away with it?
And no, I haven't killed anybody and I'm not planning to - I was just curious.

Shade-tolerant plants! I have a small raised bed outside my door which is in deep shade, under a large white pine tree. I'm in coastal New Hampshire, Zone 5, somewhat moderated by the ocean effect. The soil is on the acidic side but is easily augmented. It's quite moist. I don't need veggies because I grow them in a community garden, but herbs would be nice, or just ornamental things. Any ideas as to what might grow?
