This AskMe post blows my mind in a minor and enjoyable way. Who knew? It turns out a lot of people have a Tourette's-like response to embarrassing memories.

"You're really smart!"
Psychologist
Carol Dweck says that praising a child for being smart only teaches the kid to avoid any effort that might fail. "When we praise children for their intelligence, we tell them that this is the name of the game: Look smart, don't risk making mistakes." Malcolm Gladwell chimes in with
his thoughts on the importance of being a smart kid, "What a gifted child is, in many ways, is a gifted learner. And what a gifted adult is, is a gifted doer. And those are quite separate domains of achievement."

On Having A Black Name
"I am a white woman, a blond, blue-eyed white woman, and I have a first name strongly associated with black women. My mother, a southerner by birth, never stopped telling me she made the name up. The fact that she truly could not remember ever hearing the name before, is a testament to the strength of southern segregation. It is likely she heard it once or twice, and simply forgot it until later. And so, even at 50 years old, I have a name that makes people do a double-take. "You're _____?" is something I have heard all my life. "Yes, that would be me," is what I say, as they look confused. I have upset the social order. Names, I have learned, are a big, big part of it."

I have trouble keeping up with the big political news on television. So I use the clips on
crooksandliars.com as a way of staying on top of what the current political stories are and how they are being discussed. What I don't like is the editorializing. It's not that I disagree with all their takes, I just find that the way they push their agenda distracts from what I am trying to get from the site. Is there another blog that can keep me up to date with the current television news cycle that is a bit more unbiased? Specifically one that includes video clips of the pundit discussions?

Best Story Ever
is a series of clips featuring various celebrities --
Henry Rollins,
Lewis Black,
Dee Snider,
Chuck D,
Ron Jeremy,
Bret "The Hitman" Hart, and many more -- telling their best stories. Some are lame, some are funny. But hey, what's your best story ever?
(It can't be lamer than Alan Thicke's, can it?)

A few years ago I saw a graph/map/info chart that displayed Napoleon's 1812 March to Russia. What was interesting about the graphic was how it displayed multiple facets of informations all at once.

Years ago I read a Guitar World column written by Diamond (later Dimebag) Darrell. If memory serves, in one column he offered to mail a six pack of beer to anyone who learned some riff he notated. Does anyone know of a recipient of Dimebag's beer?

I really like the music used in the game Team Fortress 2 (TF2). I describe it as 60's secret agent music (think early James Bond). Where can I find more music like this? Is there a sub-genre style of music that this belongs to?
If you don't know what TF2 is, check out the
trailers.

"If the emergence of techno and the proliferation of its related genres thrust DJs and producers into the spotlight, it also spawned artists who, like Kraftwerk before them, chose to remain anonymous and distant. The Scottish duo Boards of Canada (Marcus Eoin and Michael Sandison) is a case in point, an even more enigmatic presence on the UK's electronic music landscape than Aphex Twin and Autechre. Eoin and Sandison have consistently minimized their role in the commercial side of music-making and have avoided its attendant lifestyle: They've shunned city life for the rural seclusion of their Hexagon Sun studio and its local collective of artists. They claim to record primarily for themselves and their friends. They have reportedly amassed an enormous archive of unreleased music dating back to the early '80s (numerous apocryphal BoC tracks make the rounds). They seldom give interviews or perform live."

I need software that will track my nutritional intake. It would track calories, carbs, protean, fats and keep them in a date base for reference. It should have a good sized date base of foods already in it and be able to have new ones added. This is for a pre-intel Mac preferably, or online if need by. Free or cheap would make me happy.

T.R.A.N.S.I.T.
is, by a wide margin, my favorite animated short ever produced. Set in the art deco Europe of the 1920's and (and released in 1997) it tells the story of a journey throughout several major vacation destinations of a wealthy tycoon, his young wife with wandering eyes, and a murderous turn of events. The story is told in reverse, from the final stage of the "vacation" back through each prior stop, and the artwork for each segment is painted in the style of the luggage travel sticker for that stop.
