We secretly switched their operating system....

Microsoft, browbeaten by criticism over Windows Vista, demoed a new operating system code-named Project Mojave to a group of Windows XP users. An overwhelming majority of the XP users liked what they saw. It was then that Microsoft told them they were drinking Folgers Crystals, er, using Windows Vista.

When the chimes finish, begin.

Looking for songs by bands that are in the style of Ennio Morricone's Spaghetti Western soundtracks.

Help me take my running a step further

I started running through the walking-running method last year. I have got to the point where I did a 10k run last Sunday; I ran all the way (yay!) and did it in just under 1 hr 9 minutes. The magazine I read, etc, make it clear that to expect to run better/faster/stronger/safer, I need to do some non-running activities now, as well as the running. I am looking at buying a home multigym type thing. Recommendations please! Also - I'd like to increase my hip flexibility - so I can stride longer - I feel I am a bit "tight" at the moment. Best exercises for that? On the machine/ using a ball thing?

A wire cutter by any other name?

As part of a demo my professor brought out some wire cutters and said as an aside "we won't use the other name for them, because that's not a nice thing to be saying". What's this other name?

Why Wi-Fi Why?

One iPhone. One Zoom X6 ADSL Wireless Router. My Wi-Fi connection to my iPhone keeps dropping in and out. My laptop and workstation do not have any problems with the router, only my iPhone. I have tried to 'Forget the Network', 'Renew the Lease', reset the router, turn off / on Wi-Fi on the iPhone, etc. Too no avail. If I watch the Wifi settings on the iPhone, I can see the ip settings get set, and then disappear, and then set, and disappear again. What is happening here, and how can I fix it?

This may be the coolest flash game ever. Although it's graphics are nothing to write home about, the game play (which I will wisely follow kotaku's example in not spoiling for you) is quite simply incredible. It's a unique and quick little work break for you via kotaku.

How to Grow Good Credit in 2008

The Last Iceberg

The Last Iceberg suffers, as many photography sites do, from a mildly irritating flash interface; but if you can get over that fact, you'll see some genuinely amazing polar photography of isolated icebergs & ice shelves.

Doing my homework

I could offer excuses, but I won't. I'm unacceptably uninformed about the presidential hopefuls. Are there any good sites/articles offering summaries, breakdowns and/or analyses of the candidates' views/opinions on key issues? I'm primarily, but not exclusively, interested in the Democratic candidates.

Boo!

Spooky halloween sounds via wfmu. "Talk about a budget label classic! I was first introduced to this LP by Jack Diamond. Side 1 is pretty standard horror sounds, but Side 2 is where the magic is found! I love these remarks by a friend which pretty much sums it up: "Side 2 of this album is unlike other Halloween sound effect records floating around in that it is all theremin! And get a load of those track titles?! It sounds as if someone let a 5 year old kid noodle around for a while. It's super scary!"

All the news that's fit to print

Censored: The scariest news may be the stuff you haven’t seen yet. David Phinney thought he’d struck journalistic gold. The veteran reporter, who has done freelance work for PBS, ABC, The New York Times, and other news companies, learned from a disgusted American contractor that the Kuwaiti company hired to build the U.S. embassy in Iraq was using forced laborers trafficked in from Asia.

Who was this peripatetic observer of suburbia that I heard on NPR so long ago?

I heard a story on NPR some time ago, and am having no luck finding it now. It was about a man, possibly a professor of architecture, who taught students how to mindfully walk and study the suburban landscape. Who was this person?

Just four words. Our legacy. Our epitaph.

"Humanity will wither and die. It’s inevitable now..." It's a work of fiction, or so one would hope. I humbly submit for your perusal if not approval, Humanity’s Final Message to Those Who Would Come After by Jeff Harrell. "It’s not hard to understand why. The big picture is scary. The big picture is that we’re all dying. Every last one of us."

Speeches. And Herb!

104 year-old Herb Hamerol was the lone survivor on hand at this year's 101st memorial for the 1906 San Francisco earthquake. To some people he's a celebrity. Truth is, to attend the memorial he took the day off from his long-held job as a stock clerk at Andronico's supermarket. Yes, read that paragraph again.

How to seperate Important vs. Urgent

Over and over again I am being told I need to distinguish between the important vs. the urgent. But nobody gives you any specific strategies on just how to go about doing that. In the morning everything looks urgent and everything looks important. I'm being told that tasks like: Balance the checkbook - Change the oil - Return the overdue library book - Making collection calls, etc. are all unimportant tasks and should be pushed aside for the Important tasks, like: Researching that new business idea, developing my subordinates, personal development. Yet when ever I spend time with the important tasks, the unimportant task terrorize my mental energy and sap any enthusiasm I have for engaging in important tasks. I often give to the impulse to get at some urgent but not important tasks and piss away another day. Only to get up and repeat the process the very next day. I'd be interested in hearing about strategies, systems or products that you use to break yourself out of this loop.
