Come on Indian MeFites, spill the lentils, divulge your most tasty family recipes.

To the Indian MeFites - and the non-indian chefs as well - what are your favorite family Indian recipes and what are some tricks in the preparation to give the food that authentic Indian taste. You know, rich, delicious, mouth-watering, and savoury to the point that eating becomes a spiritual experiece in itself.

How did Library Cards Work?

How did paper-based library circulation work before computers? I remember that the librarian stamped the book and the book's card with the due date (by hand), and then kept the card. What did they do with the card? How did they associate the book with my account? Was there a separate ledger where they kept the association? Or did they write my name/number on the card itself?

Purse contents for the perpetually prepared person

What are some good items to keep in my purse? The current set of things I keep in there seem to serve me well but I'm looking for ideas that would help me be even more prepared for whatever comes up.

How to stop young dudes from taking over library ‘puters

I work at a public library where we use a popular pc reservation and management system for our public PCs. Some young dudes come in, bypass the login screens and play World of Warcraft etc from their flash disks. My concern is they’ve managed to get admin privileges to do naughty things like extend their session time and kick other people with reservations off. I am just a lowly circulation clerk wondering if anyone could explain HOW these fellows bypass the reservation system and some possible strategies I could suggest while I wait to unleash my ultimate plan for a sound proof gamers lounge.

Desperately Seeking Cowbell

I just bought my drummer a cowbell, but she's unsure of when to use it. I want to make her a list of songs with interesting uses of cowbell (or something similar, like a woodblock), but so far I've come up with: "Don't Fear the Reaper" - Blue Oyster Cult (obviously) "Red Morning Light" - Kings of Leon I'm surprised that I couldn't find more, and I'm sure that I'm missing some pretty obvious ones. Any help?

What are some good blogs/sites that are like kottke.org?

I love reading sites like kottke.org and Neatorama (and, of course, Metafilter). It's exciting - I never know what I'll come across next. What are some other sites that have lots of interesting stuff, preferably on a daily basis (but less often is fine as long as the content is high quality)?

Need a library card number to access online databases

I need a library card to access online databases, in particular JSTOR, OED, Author databases and generally the more the better. My state library sucks so I guess I need to buy an out of state card. San Francisco, New York City and Boston seem to have a decent database selection. Any reccomendations for an affordable out of state library card?

Children's books for boys?

What are some great classic children's books geared toward boys? (Excluding sci-fi). I'm working on a project for which I need a long list of children's books for both boys and girls. Being a gal myself, I've got that covered; the boys' list is harder.

Fiction I can read to a 5 yr old?

I like reading to my 5yr old son at bedtime. We have discovered that we both enjoy reading longer books/ novels with many chapters and some pictures here and there. Our latest was the original "The House at Pooh Corner". Please suggest more!

Bring me to the edge of my seat, and then push me over!

What's the most exciting novel you've ever read? I mean this in the simplest sense: an exciting plot. I'm looking for page-turners. Novels that keep you on the edge of your seat and refuse to let you sleep until you finish them. I'm looking for genre novels -- but I don't care what genres: Mystery, thriller, sci-fi, etc. (though sci-fi/fantasy has been done-to-death here, so I'm really more interested in other genres.) Oh, I care about words. So no matter how exciting, I'll quit reading if the prose is crappy.
