Joy Division - Heart and Soul, what will burn

Control, the biopic covering the the life and untimely death of Joy Division's singer Ian Curtis, opens in the US today (on a limited release) [ trailer | fan site | on set interview ]. This is director Anton Corbijn's debut full length film [ interview ] and was co-produced by Tony Wilson (a giant in the Manchester and UK music scene, sadly missed. Check out 24 Hour Party People [trailer | clip]) . Control opened in the UK several days ago and the reviews are largely positive [ Guardian | Times Online | Independent | Channel 4 | Time Out | Manchester Evening News ].

Really, really, really good non-fiction books

Few books have given me as much sheer joy as Bringhurst's "The Elements of Typographic Style". Tufte's "Visual Explanations" is also up there in terms of content and presentation. What other exceedingly well researched, written and designed non-fiction books would you recommend for somebody interested in Design, Architecture, Programming, Information Visualization, Maps, Math, Music and Science?

Gin and tonic demonic, bodies smell like chronic......

Gin and tonic demonic, bodies smell like chronic... so a couple weeks ago I discovered the drink known as gin and tonic. It had a small lime slice, ice and apparently just gin and tonic. I am totally not a cocktail person (wine and beer) and I have no hard liquors currently. How would I go preparing this Sprite-like contraption so it doesn't reek of a Victorian commoner. Details and general cocktail advice appreciated within.

Low-budget auteurs

I really love the works of low-budget auteurs like Hal Hartley, Gregg Araki, and Jim Jarmusch (also, although they don't fit so much in the low-budget category, Richard Linklater and War-Kong Wei). Are there any other auteurs out there whose movies I should watch? To refine your suggestions, I'm not looking for classic directors like Godard or Bergman, or big names like Wenders or Greenaway or Tarantino or Von Trier. I'm interested in learning about directors who are not big names. Basically, I'm looking for interesting young directors whose films are available on DVD but have not emerged into the national spotlight.

What was the greatest american band?

ÜbergroupFilter: Coworkers and I were discussing, what make a classic "all-time greatest band in the world" band, ones that were equally musically adept, great songwriting, and inspirational. All the examples we could think of were british; The Stones, The Beatles, Cream etc... What American bands would meet the above criteria?

No Context

"A fedora hat worn by me without the necessary protective irony would eat through my head and kill me." Goodbye to George W.S. Trow, one of the strangest, wisest, disturbingest writer ever to gape at, marvel at, and love his fellow Americans. His 1980 essay "Within the Context of No Context" (which shared with J.D. Salinger's last published story the distinction of taking up an entire issue of the New Yorker) placed television, irony, and distance at the center of the new United States. He also wrote the less well-known (but equally beautiful) short story collection Bullies, along with a novel and several screenplays, helped found National Lampoon, and was a staff writer at the New Yorker from 1966 until 1994, when he quit in protest of Roseanne Barr's guest-editing stint. He died on November 24, in Naples, at the age of 63. Appreciations from the New York Observer, Slate, and Gawker.

Velvet Underground Acetate Breaks Record

What you have purchased for less than the price of a cup of coffee is arguably one of the most important "lost" music recordings out there. Record collector Warren Hill paid 75 cents at a yard sale in Chelsea, New York for an acetate in a plain cardboard sleeve. After some research, Hill's friends confirmed that the acetate disc, recorded by sound engineer Norman Dolph (who also wrote Reunion's "Life Is A Rock But The Radio Rolled Me"), was the third recording ever made by the Velvet Underground and the first album they ever did. A demo rejected by Columbia Records, the acetate is now up for auction on EBay, where the high bid is $124,640.50 and climbing, already breaking records as the most expensive LP ever sold at auction. (Bonus: see a post from a teenage eyewitness to the VU's 1966 session that produced this acetate.)

Making a movie master list

I want to make a list of every movie and book I've ever seen/read. There are a few categorizing apps like this, but nothing I've found is very efficient. Here's my idea and tell me if it's already been done: I can search by genre, actor, director, author, etc and be given a list (preferably with the movie/book cover as a clickable icon), which I can then simply click on to go to my master list. The list then has my choices darkened (and the unclicked ones still light), so I can easily see, say, which Scorsese movie I haven't gotten to yet. Does anything like this exist? If not, it'd be a good project for me to work on (tho probably waaay over my head).

How much should I give to charity?

I'm ashamed: I bought a house, my child goes to a daycare that costs several hundred dollars a month, and I have all that I need. I also have been lax in giving to charity. I'd like to, but my wife sometimes is resistant, saying some version of the old saw that charity begins at home. I want some independent assessment for how much we should give. I've identified a number of charities I want to give to. But how much? Should it be a percentage of my salary?
