MeTa post: Hubbard tested, Xenu approved!
>"If the Scientologists are stupid enough to spend money advertising on a site whose readers are highly unlikely to be responsive to their message, then it's Matt's gain and their loss."

Only it's not their money. It's money they've manipulated from weak and vulnerable people. The only place that money should be going is back to the person it was stolen from.

MeTa post: Misandry and Ask Metafilter.
Telling someone to leave a relationship that isn't working for them is not misandry or misogyny. Telling someone "all men/women are pigs/whores" is more like it. I don't see how the comments that you quote show any pattern of man hating. We see plenty of threads that say both "ditch that guy" and "ditch that girl" and both pieces of advice can at times be warranted.

AskMe appears to routinely reinforce the notion that misandry is... [more]

Sure, sure, I've been up smoking crank for three days straight, but I have to agree that this is a clear cut case of conspiracy. In fact, jessamyn has a remote sonar device that is causes me to experience anti-male sentiments any time I even see the color green. But she can't exactly show this device to you, because it was very skillfully wired into her teeth by the CIA.

MeFi post: Global Domination: The Missing Manual
It's a fascinating exercise, comparing the US with Imperial Rome... indeed, there have been recent books on the subject. There are certainly a lot of parallels: aggressive over-expansion in the face of resource depletion; heavy reliance on imports for basic necessities (grain shipments from Egypt for Rome, oil from overseas for the US); greater use of immigrants and mercenaries in the armed forces (interestingly, with the same fast-track "be a citizen through military service" deal);... MeFi post: Put simply: it could be taken out by a WWII Japanese kamikaze pilot.
WASHINGTON, July 23 (Reuters) - A U.S. Navy decision to scrap the DDG-1000 destroyer program after just two ships could have "potentially devastating consequences" said Sen. Susan Collins, a Maine Republican whose state includes General Dynamics Corp's (GD.N: Quote, Profile, Research) Bath Iron Works shipyard.

MeFi post: Danieal Kelly
I just wonder what her childhood was like; what her mother's childhood was like; how many generations back you would have to go to discover what went wrong.

I've worked with families like Danieal's, in fact one just like Danieal's, from Danieal's neighborhood. This family was living in an abandoned house with no utilities, no running water, using a single kerosene heater to keep small children warm in the middle of winter. There were layers of... [more]

MeTa post: Alabama big pig followup
To summarize: A family bought a farm hog, drove it out into the woods, and watched their 11 year-old son kill it over a period of three hours by shooting it repeatedly with a low caliber pistol.

They then digitally altered the photos to make the hog look like a monster, made up a story that made the kid sound like a monster-slayer, and peddled the photos to every news outlet they could find.

Their story is quickly revealed as bogus and now there... [more]

Anyone, and this includes the columnist, who complains that this is "fast food apartheid" has:

1. Never lived under apartheid
2. Doesn't begin to know what the word "apartheid" means
3. Doesn't realize how offensive it is to misuse this kind of rhetoric

I've been following this story for a bit, and that Slate column is absolute bullshit.

—They're not closing current restaurants, of which there are plenty. So, it's not a ban on selling food to adults. Which means that his thesis is a bit of rhetorical trickery argued to emotion, rather than reason (what used to be called an ad hominem).

Yeah, clearly this is crazy talk. Next we won't be able to open strip clubs next to elementary schools and zoning boards will limit the number of bars in city limits.

Its so unfair to live in a democracy where citizens elect representatives who pass laws in an attempt to shape their community.

I have no idea why that thread went on for so long.

- It was bloggy drama, which is personally engaging to a lot of people who pay attention to the blogosphere in a way that is more intimate and direct than, say, some Corporation X.
- When the dam finally broke on the 1st, there was nonetheless a lingering sense that This Wasn't Done Yet: Boingers saying they needed time to make a statement, folks wondering where Cory was.

The longboat joke started in 9622v.2 ("That's not MY longboat.") I can't get a link to it, but it was thread number 9622 on MetaTalk, if someone else can bring it up.

It had nothing to do with the length of the thread. It had to do with silliness and my being in Iceland at the time and some talk of a longboat landing carrying MeFites and, well, silliness. It was really ONLY about longboats.

Does not the establishment of a right to marry mean that homosexual couples can sue churches for refusing to marry them?

Not any more than Protestants can sue the Catholic church for not marrying them. The right to marry is about getting the marriage certificate from the government, not performing the ceremony.

Yeah. Blowing off steam. Exactly the way a depressed person blows of steam when they fantasize endlessly about suicide. Thank god they blow off the steam, or, who knows, their endless planning, and picking a date, and buying a noose, and writing notes -- well, that might end up in someone actually killing themselves, rather than what generally happens, which is that blowing off steam helps the depressed person to become happy again.
