Decadent literature recommendations

Starting a book club for literature of the decadent movement. Starting with Against Nature. What next? What else?

Create opening for kiss or wait it out?

I fancy this girl. We've been on 8 dates now. We haven't kissed. Should I make a move, or wait for the 'moment' to arise, or have I been relegated to the 'friend zone'? [long]

So a murderer walks into a bar...

The filesystem jokes in this Reiser trial thread struck me as being in particularly bad taste.

So, you thought Cricket was for sissies, aye?

First, a bit of an introduction to the game of Cricket (youtube) for those of us who may not be familiar with the sport. Next, a few clips (1, 2, 3, 4) on how awesome the Gentleman's Game can be (and you thought we didn't do anything but roam around in our white pants and cotton shirts...). But, if that wasn't enough for you, then here's a taste of Twenty20 Cricket (the fast, fast paced version of the game), and the new DLF Indian (pdf) Premier League. (This is in addition to the One Day Matches, which were instituted to bring in a bit more excitement into the game during the 1970's, prior to which the match only consisted of Tests. However, some purists still maintain that the game would've been better served had it not been commercalized to the extent that it has, and still prefer the leisurely pace of the original format to its current incarnation.)

C'est une beauté de chemin à faire, hein?

So, good day, and welcome to the Bob and Doug McKenzie FPP. How's it goin' eh? Like, I've got some back bacon fryin' up on the Coleman, a dozen donuts, a two-four, and our topic today is stuff on the internet relating to these two Canadian hoseheads. So, like, sit back, put a toque on, grab a beer, and enjoy!

Beirut Music Videos

The band Beirut released the Flying Club Cup on October 9th, and La Blogothèque has filmed unique, one take, on the spot, mostly public 'music videos' of each track.

What are the most intellectually stimulating podcasts?

What podcasts will make me more intelligent just by listening to them? I enjoy the BBC's "In Our Time", which features serious discussion of historical events and people by academics working in the field, and also quirky, thought-provoking programs like WNYC's "Radio Lab" and "This American Life". I'm not so keen on some of the podcasts I typically get from newspapers that gloss over the surface of a subject with little analysis. What other highbrow podcasts are made by people who really know their shit?

Short jokes

My wife is working very difficult and stressful night shifts for the next few weeks. To help her keep from becoming emotionally overwhelmed, I like to send her jokes to her text pager. It's quickly become hard to find quality jokes that are short enough, though. Little help?

Mathowie's Community Blog

This song is called mathowie's community blog, and it's about mathowie, and the community blog, but mathowie's community blog is not the name of the community blog, that's just the name of the song. - lyrical brilliance by It's Raining Florence Henderson, with extra bits of artistic license taken in the studio. - Arlo-esque lead vocals by French Fry, aka Alex Millard, aka my brother.

What should I memorize?

What are some common and useful things I can memorize? I carry a Hipster PDA around, and I'd like to fill an index card or two with poetry, facts, or anything useful to memorize in my spare moments (standing in line, stuck somewhere without a book). I am not interested in scripture or conversion rates.

I had a pretty interesting link for a fpp but I found out the hard way that I have to wait a week (5 days? 7 days?) before i get to to post on the big blue. Isn't is safe to assume that the new members aren't just people that wandered in to mefi and joined, but rather lurkers who've been dying to post for quite a while?

Also, I was able to post a question in askme as well as this thread, so I'm thinkin maybe we need some policy revision

How about a round of applause for skygazer,...

How about a round of applause for skygazer, missing member of mefi swapset grey from 11/05 who not only finally sent along the CDs, but included a short handwritten note, a tiny toy gun, an even smaller piece of black licorice, a guitar string, and a particularly meaningful (to me at least) blank postcard of early concept designs of the space shuttle.

All of this arrived in the mail in the midst of particularly bad week, so to receive a bit of human sharedness and new music to discover from a total stranger was great. My faith in mefi and humanity is restored. Thank you.

What tracks should I play at a totally awesome dance party?

I'm hosting a large dance party next week (combined birthday party and other celebration), and I'm trying to put together a playlist for it. I'm leaning toward electro, synthpop, funk, and remixes, but after looking through my library (which is pretty weighted towards indie rock and folk), I've realized I don't have very much. Any suggestions for songs that should go on there?

Business and the decline of political liberty

The Mayfair Set [Google Video]. A BBC Documentary series on how City of London bankers systematically dismantled British industry from the 1960s-90s and removed the power of the state to protect people from the greed of the market A thought provoking documentary from Adam Curtis whose other documentaries The Power of Nightmares and The Century of the Self have been previously discussed and well received on Mefi. It is almost four hours long but well worth the effort.

The Torontoist Cover Song Catalogue

The Torontoist Cover Song Catalogue. We tried to avoid some of the more obvious cover hits (like Alien Ant Farm's recent chart-topper "Smooth Criminal") and we stuck with actual recorded covers rather than including those only played in concert. You'll notice that most of these cover versions are pretty chilled-out, which is a byproduct of looking for tracks that were eclectic, odd and often very different from the originals.

Do "The Rules" have any validity whatsoever?

Do The Rules, Why Men Love Bitches, and He's Not That Into You have any truth to them? There are so many out there now, and they all seem to have the same basic message - I'm wondering if anyone here actually has read them, thinks they are valid, or has other experiences/opinions? I'm especially curious as to what men think.
