The books you would take to a deserted island

I'm looking for books and graphic novels that are meant to be read multiple times.

What's the name of this particular peer review website?

There's a specific website I once visited. You could post your ideas for anything - a product, a new technology, a book, etc. Other users could comment and critique your idea. The website had a large picture of a fortune cookie on it. Does anybody know the name and URL of the website I speak of?

Indian consumer-oriented research service?

I'm looking for a company based in India, cited in a story I heard on NPR sometime in the past week or so, that handles a given number of Joe Consumer research queries per month for a flat fee.

right turn on red from outside lane

I know it's legal to make a right turn on a red light after a complete stop (at least in CA). Does that apply when there are *two* right turn lanes? That is, in areas where there are two right turn lanes, I've never thought twice about making a right on red when I'm in the lane closest to the curb. But I've always been a bit skittish about making a right on red in the "outside" lane. Is a right on red (after a complete stop) legal from the "outside" lane as well?

We love it. Deal with it.

Okay LA folk... time to tell me... what are your favorite things about/in Los Angeles? Especially your favorite hidden secret stuff that maybe only locals know of. Or super good deals or scenes that make you happy. Stuff that actually makes you stop for a second and think, "Man, I love this place" whether you want to or not.

Los Angeles-area sustainably raised, grass-fed, etc. dairy?

Been a lifelong carnivore. Went vegan recently because factory meat farming, factory dairy, etc. just appall me. Unfortunately, since I'm allergic to soy and corn, a vegan diet is very limiting. I'd like to reintroduce dairy, and maybe even the occasional poultry/meat, but I am not comfortable with it not being sustainably raised. Now let me define terms.

What are the alcohol content(s) for different extracts?

I'm looking into producing some of my own extracts for baking. Specifically I am trying to find the FDA recommended alcohol content for different flavors (so if I make a lot, it doesn't spoil). Vanilla seems to be 35%, Peppermint 89%. I can't seem to find all the data in one area though. Is there some site that can give me what I need without hours of googling?

Teach me where to fish...

I've had what I think is a decent idea for a website. Rather than asking someone to "punch it up" in their "spare time" I'd like to learn to do it myself. I know a bit about html and took a turbo pascal class 11 years ago. Since then it's been all humanities, social science, and law. What do I need to learn and what, in your experience, are the best books/web sites to learn from?

Eat Food, but which leaves, and how?

According to Michael Pollan's Eat Food article in the New York Times, we're supposed to eat more plants, esp leaves. So where are the leaf recipes? Does this come down to nothing more than spinach and lettuce salads or is there a interesting cuisine out there somewhere? Are there any cookbooks with leafy foods as their focus?

Hack My Baby

Give me your baby hacks! My wife and I are expecting our first child in November. What tips and tricks can you offer us to make our lives a lot easier? For example, a friend of mine swears that putting a crying baby in front of a mirror will cause it to stop. Another uses noise cancelling headphones to temper the noise from his shrieking child. I am looking for hacks on everything from diaper changing to stroller modifications. Make our lives easier as we enter into parenthood.

Please help me not rue the day I planted rhubarb

Looking at my rhubarb patch, it seems I'm going to be eating a lot of rhubarb this summer. Though my mother always had some in our garden, I don't think I've ever eaten rhubarb in any form but in rhubarb pie or rhubarb crisp. What's your favourite rhubarb recipe?

Scifi: is it worth a cat's pockets?

My girlfriend's mother and I have a real intellectual rapport, in some ways. Recently we've been talking about literature. She's extraordinarily widely read, but only really within the canon. I've been fronting, claiming that genre fiction like sci-fi has plenty of stuff of genuine literary merit in it. She's called my bluff and asked for a recommendation. What would you suggest? I was thinking something strange and ornate like Cordwainer Smith, but am open to advice.
