MeFi post: Cabela's has some weird stuff.
Bush's policy about Iraq makes ME "laugh out loud" (when it doesn't make me cry), but I'm not linking to it, no matter how much you all beg me to!

MeFi post: Tiny?
Obversely all the young men who carefully go the speed limit, or less, all the time reach the intersections, at which point, the attractive young women standing there immediately strip naked and jump in their cars, and copulation ensues.

MeFi post: Hipster CEOs go 1880s robber baron retro by building large libraries
I'm an avid bibliophile with my own library, but this whole article reads like a cross between a paean to bibliofetishism and a hymn of plutolatry.

Bully for them, but rich people reading books, and spending a lot for them, doesn't really impress me so much, I guess.

I would think corpse eating rats are sort of standard for New York. When the coin flips and you have rat eating corpses I will read your ManBitesDog story.

MeFi post: Bruce Willis is a ghost
This one jenky looking unemployed roofer with a knee brace ejaculates half-heartedly on the face of a bored and possibly stoned lady with a lot of plastic surgery scars and blurry tattoos and then presumably returns to fixing the cable.

Jofus, you've made me just a little queasy.

The jam, at any rate, should be raspberry. And sprouted grain bread makes Baby Jesus cry. Or at least pick at His teeth with a toothpick and wish someone'd had the decency to pick up an Italian loaf or something.

On preview: Your recipe gets even more nausea-inducing, Jofus.

It's actually Burt Reynolds's mustache, because "Burt Reynolds'" is not an accepted liturgical archaism.

Dumbass.

Ask post: We could put on a show
Welcome to your barn. I have a barn. I hope you love your barn. I have mixed feelings about mine, but one of them is love. The roof blew off in Hurricane Floyd and cost about 12K to replace. It was covered by insurance but I got into a tussle with some roofers who I had to take to court. I won the court case but they never paid. I'd send the sheriff after them but they live down the street and I'd be afraid they'd try to burn the place down with me in it.

My barn is... [more]

We'd all like to know where at the "t" is, and that's fine.

What's not fine is rarely is the question asked, is our children learning?

Ask post: Quitting my job after 5 months. How do I explain to prospective employers why?
I've been in the (IT) workplace for more than twenty years now.

Last year, I left a job after a little less than eight months.

It just wasn't a good fit.

"It wasn't a good fit" is universally understood by all hiring managers to mean "I Can't Say Anything Nice About Them And So I'm Not Saying Anything At All. My, The Weather Is Quite Something Lately, Isn't It?"

Never, ever... [more]

MeFi post: Don't mind me, I'm dead.
> I wonder how long it'll take before public librarianship as a profession merges with social work.

Amen. If I had a nickle for every time I've thought or said, or heard a co-worker say, "I didn't get into this profession to be a social worker", I'd have enough money to retire. The problem, as touched upon above, with the homeless and unruly teens at the library (and, as a public librarian, give me the homeless over the teens any day of... [more]

MeFi post: The Internet is their CBGB.
Since I already laid out my impressive credentials for judging music in the recent Wilco thread, I won't repeat them here.

Let me just say that, thanks to my impressive credentials, I am able to write definitively that my opinion of Patti Smith is the correct and accurate one. All reasonable people will surely agree with me on this.

MeFi post: Who is Chuck Klosterman?
I've only read one article by Chuck Klosterman, but his piece on Barry Bonds is pretty much the only interesting, insightful thing that's ever been written about the man.

It's a must read for anyone who wants to understand what the deal is with baseball and steroids. If he's half as perceptive about other subjects, he's probably a hell of a writer, overexposed or not.

Ask post: Tears of Octopussy Rage
Sorry, should have said, what the book mentioned by annoying the octopus were things like hiding behind rocks, poking it with sticks, flashing lights/colours at it. Generally pissing the thing off, in order to get it to die by apoplexy/anger.

Ask post: take this job and.....
Personal advice from my personal treasure trove of experience: Lie. Lie lie lie. My personal favorite is I'm looking into pursuing education. You wanna know the truth: from my lips to God's ears, I hope I NEVER see the inside of an educational institution again, I HATE school. Always did, always will. But it is a nice, pat excuse. Still trying to decide the best program, looking at an MBA, shoot for a job where I can work my way up to management. Whatever.

If you... [more]

MeFi post: In a culture where work can be a religion, burnout is its crisis of faith.
Marie Curie hardly burned out. She died at the age of 67, a ripe old age, all things considered, and was passionate about her life's work to the end. If that's a joke, it's a dumb joke.

I really dislike articles like this, which attempt to be educational, clever, entertaining, and insightful, each of those qualities contributing to the drowning of the others like shipwreck victims scrambling over each other's backs. Which are generally what New York Magazine, The New... [more]

Interesting article, although somewhat shallow in my opinion. While I know this is the NY Magazine, the way the article kept going back to how this affects New Yorkers and no one else was off-putting.

I had to snort at the researcher who said surgeons burn out because, among other things, "patients are more demanding". Yes, I know they weren't expecting me to feel sorry for anyone mentioned in the article, but I could hardly feel a twinge of sympathy for... [more]
