Looking for community building tool to create a family website. I have family all across the US and would like to create a website where each family member could create their own profile, make posts, share photos. Like a MySpace or Facebook but something more private and to a degree less complex. Something that is just for invited users, something that is easy to use for non-technical users and something that I can host and administer. Open source solutions would be preferred. I have used wordpress, drupal, and joomla but each requires tweaking and modules, and lots of research to setup. Just wondering if there are any prepackages solutions or easier to use modules for WP, drupal, or joomla. Thanks.

Coulda swore there was an AskMe about a site that would allow you to punch in a URL and see what the site looks likes on different browsers/platforms... but of course I can't find it. Anyone recall this or am I imagining it?

The Weird-Ass Picture Book Awards, WAPB,
are given to the books that make you go “Huhhh?” Awards are given for story, illustration, and cover art. The highest award goes to the picture book achieving outstanding weirdness in both illustration and text. The 2007 WAPBA went to The Fuchsia Is Now, by J. Otto Seibold, for its strange story and artwork. The interesting use of condoms as hats was clearly a deciding factor in this book’s selection. Dear Fish, by Chris Gall, won for both illustration and cover art. For storyline, My Father the Dog, by Elizabeth Bluemle, took the prize.

Grody summer sandal feet, cracked heels, yada yada. I know what I need to do (pumice, shea butter, etc.), but in the summer I'm already burning up even before I try to put socks on at night! Is there anything else I can do?

Over the last few months one of the Metafilter regulars has produced a number of comments demonstrating an above average grasp of the democratic parties political process as well as an above average ability to articulate that understanding in to language that highlights the substance of the comments.

I am planning an extensive tattoo and would like to have it done in brown ink. I have seen a few that look beautiful but the tattoo artist I have chosen is advising me against it as he said it will not fade out well (he says it will degrade fairly quickly and fade unevenly). I'm in a quandry because I'm not crazy about black tattoos. Does anyone have personal experience with this? I haven't been able to find much online about it.
Here is an example of what I like.

To the Indian MeFites - and the non-indian chefs as well - what are your favorite family Indian recipes and what are some tricks in the preparation to give the food that authentic Indian taste. You know, rich, delicious, mouth-watering, and savoury to the point that eating becomes a spiritual experiece in itself.

If you saw two guys named Hambone and Flippy, which one would you think liked dolphins the most? I'd say Flippy, wouldn't you? You'd be wrong, though. It's Hambone.
I love the writings of

Deep Thoughts (beware sound!) and his articles in the
New Yorker. I would love to hear recommendations of similarly funny writings.

I was in a bar the other night and the bartender passed out a poker chip to everybody in the house, which was, I found out, how the bartender or bar owner buys a round for everybody. I never saw this before. How widespread is this tradition (a round on the house via passing out a token to everybody?)

I really like looking at pictures of beautiful/clever/interesting products. What are some frequently updated blogs that feature good pictures of really cool stuff? I'm talking about pictures of clothing, gadgets, prints, handmade goods, kitchen implements...pictures of almost anything tangible, and the featured items don't have to be for sale.
